Hello everyone, I was accepted to Northeastern with an excellence scholarship and I have now narrowed my college choices to Northeastern and McGill. I think i'm going to study politics (political science / international relations) and would like to know how Northeastern's poli sci program would stack up against McGill's. I've heard poor things about Northeastern's liberal arts program and I would like to get some clarification. What are the strengths of Northeastern's political science progam?

bumpity bump

I don't really know anything about the program, but since no one else seems to either... I think it's decent, or at least good enough that if you make the best of it, you'll probably get a good education. Again, I don't know much so take that with a grain of salt, and I have no idea how the program is at McGill so I can't compare the two.

I've heard some good things about the professors in the department, and former Mass. Governor Michael Dukakis teaches a course which is pretty impressive. My friend is a poli sci major and she's currently studying abroad, after co-oping with the Deval Patrick campaign, so there are some good opportunities available.

I also know people @ NU who are political science or international relations who have cooped with Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in DC. One of my friends works there now and works with all the higher up staff with attending meetings, going on trips (hes always traveling), etc. Also there are coops and other opportunities with people at the Massachusetts Statehouse and I am sure other places.

I'm a Poli Sci Major at Northeastern and it is by far the most under-rated dept. at the University. Co-op opportunities are incredible: law firms, the CIA, Defense Intelligence, Boston City Council, Congress, State Legislature, Governor's office, State Atty. General's Office, etc.

In addition, the staff is incredible [Dukakis, obviously, but the others are very good as well]. Most have graduated from Ivy League or other prestigious schools.

NU's poli sci dept. is great, I recommend it.

With that said, I do not know much about McGill.
