northeastern university financial aid

So northeastern is my top choice, but my dad just checked out how much it would cost to attend that school last night and he said that we can't afford it, so we're not even gonna visit it, let alone apply there. I was wondering if anyone knows what their financial aid packages are like and if you think ill be able to attend there at all. my parents have $50,000 total saved, for all four years of college. I have an unweighted average of 3.9, I've been in the top 25 of my class since 7th grade, I take honors classes and will be taking college courses at the college in my city this summer/school year. Also, Id be majoring in music industry if I could go to northeastern. Are there any music scholarships available? I play several instruments but my principle instrument is clarinet, and I'm in the elite band and orchestra in my school, have participated in all county band and area all state band for several years.

When you say your Dad “checked out how much it would cost” do you mean to say that he looked at the total of the tuition, fees, room and board? Or do you mean that he ran your family’s financial information through Northeastern’s Net Price Calculator? Northeastern is a very popular destination for students in my area and I’ve known some of them (from both low income and high income families) to get very good offers.

NEU often does NOT give great aid. What did your dad check? the price or the NPC?

If a school meets need (and NEU doesn’t), then your family contribution would be about 30% of your family’s income…if the income is over $100k…which it sounds like it is.

Your GPA is good, but your SAT and ACT scores are what will matter for scholarships and likely a better aid pkg (if you qualify for aid).

It sounds like your parents plan on using the $50k towards college. Do they plan on spending any more than that? Where do they want you to go to college? How much would that school cost?

Find out what your annual budget is for college (how much they’ll spend per year including your savings.)

Your SAT scores and your parents’ budget will largely determine where you should apply.

Northeastern is one of those schools that its hard to predict with aid. For students they really want they can be quite competitive. For others they can be fairly miserly. Most of the students my wife and I have known have been given pretty good aid packages. Don’t rule out schools based on the sticker price alone.

Agree with hudsonvalley–they can be very competitive if they want you. My d was accepted for the freshman class starting in 2011 through early action. She was offered the Dean’s scholarship of $20,000 per year ($80,000 total). For the freshman year, they also gave her about $6000 in loans and some work study. She elected not to go there, but if you have good stats (d had 2160 SAT, Nat. honor society, commended student Nat. Merit Scholarship…), I think it is worth applying. Just make sure you have a financial safety that you really want to go to.

Are you likely to be an NMS Finalist? If so, you would get a full tuition scholarship at Northeastern.
