I fully believe that Hamilton CS grads are proficient coders, but coding competitions are not reflective of that. Coding competitions are highly focused on math and algorithms under pressure along with some game theory, while most definitions of CS proficiency come from careful and methodical design and/or extensive research. Very little of a CS curriculum is used in programming competitions.
@PengsPhils: I’m fine with that. Nonetheless, I was surprised by @MomInSB’s comments. Current Hamilton computer science professors cowrote CS textbooks that have been used nationally (The Analytical Engine et al). While one from this pair was an original member of a group that designed what became the accepted model curriculum for a major in computer science at liberal arts colleges.
@merc81 I think it is clear from my comment that I am relating one student’s experience with CS. The variety of course offerings in ComSci at Northeastern are far more extensive than what Hamilton has. I believe the demand at all LACs for ComSci classes is outstripping the existing infrastructure. We love Hamilton, and it does so many things so well. And I agree the Math major is top notch.
