norther va kids don't like southern va kids at uva

I have heard that the kids from northern virginia that get into UVa don't like the kids from southern virginia that get into UVa, is this true, and why is it true?

I think it's because its more difficult to get into UVa from northern VA. I guess people from NoVA resent this just as some white kids resent affirmative action. Also, I think Northern and Southern VA are just a lot different socially and culturally etc. SoVa is more 'southern', while a lot of NoVA is made up of DC suburbs.

well, affirmative action is racist.

in any case, my friend is african american, although he is white... and from South Africa. there are ways around it. ;)

he is more african than most blacks in the US. ;)

I'm not condoning or condemning affirmative action.

lol, are you using affirmative action to get into college?

No, I'm white.

awesome....

Uh, I really don't think this is true. I very much not to much SW Va lifestyle like, I think I will do fine at UVa. Saw a lot of schools at the VHSL Cross Country race this past weekend. Thomas Jefferson, seems like a bunch of ordinary kids, killed us though....

Actually it is true and it is because of the fact that kids from SW Virginia represent an underrepresented area of virginia and as a result have a much easier time getting accepted. This of course isn't true for everyone

the college admissions project, i have deduced, is a crap chute. there isn't one clear method to get into a college.

easier to get in from SW Virginia is a little simplistic. If you're from SW Virginia, in order to have a decent chance at gaining admission at UVA you have to be at the very upper echelon of your HS class (as in top 15, not top 10% or top 15%).

Here's a link w/ an article about this issue originally published by the Washington Post.

Hey, that's about my school. Cool, haha.

Yes it's true, most of us think Southern Virginians are shot-gun Republicans, hicks, farmers, and most importantly, backwards. I don't know how true that stereotype is, but we figure that our schools are a lot harder with significantly less grade inflation, etc. We laugh at the SOLs and say, "Who wouldn't get Advanced Pass? Oh - we forgot - Southern Virginians." Long story short - since we're snobby and walk around with our noses stuck in the air, we think we're better.

I remember being very offended when I took a trip to southern VA and walked in a Burger King, only to have someone whisper, as I passed by, "OMIGOD! An Asian!" The vibes were not good, to say the least, but one Southerner can't speak for everyone so...

I live in Chesapeake, VA, and UVa is my backup. You're right the SOLs are a joke, and that's the sentiment felt by the majority at my school; however, my school is ranked as one of the best in Virginia (as if that means anything). The only schools in Hampton Roads--Chesapeake, Norfolk, VA Beach, Portsmouth, Hampton, Suffolk, etc--that struggle with them are predominantly black and underfunded. Not everyone drives a tractor to school or scoffs at the sight of an Asian, just as not everyone in Northern VA is a stuckup asswhipe from DC.

As a proud Northern Virginian, I wholeheartedly support breaking off from the rest of VA and creating our own state. Fairfax, Loudon, Arlington, and PW are so different from the rest of the state. When I went to Boy's State, there were people with southern accents. I was completely taken aback. Virginia is southern??? I just thought it was the DC burbs!

Cool, we could use a bit less pricks anyway.

the best part of it all, both are looked down upon by new yorkers. oh the irony.

lol...yea it's the cool thing to do--joke on people for where they grow up, despite having very little if any control over it. kind of like joking on the handicapped

you should never joke on or about the handicapped
