It is not difficult to get a scholarship from Northern. My son got a very good one, but did not accept their offer because he wanted "bigger" mountains, although Mt. Bohemia isn't exactlly intermediate skiing. When we visited a couple years ago there were quite a few kids from northern Illinois. The skiing brings them to Northern. The school had a very nice feel to it, and quite different than the other directional schools. It might be worth a road trip. It's absolutely beautiful in and around Marquette!

Marquette is cool and I know someone who is at northern and likes it, but don't know abything about the college

There is actually a Northern Michigan University? Never heard of it.

Small, no FBS football program, cold.

Even if it's slightly better than the other directional schools it won't get as much attention.

^ Northern Michigan is known in the NCAA Div. 1 college hockey world. The won the NCAA Div 1 championship in 1991 and are often a contender in the CCHA. In fact, they just beat Michigan State in back-to-back games in the CCHA championship tournament.

NMU also is ranked much lower than top two state schools.

I would not compare NMU to Michigan State and U of M. Northern is not a flagship school and is much, much smaller than U of M and State. It's not an apples to apples comparison. The kids that go to Northern that don't live in the UP, go there because of the school and the location. Northern is more of a destination college. I don't know what FBS is, but Northern has a football team that plays in a dome. One of Northern's claims to fame is that the founder of Starbucks went to Northern and if I remember Northern is also one of the 4 US Olympic training centers in the US.
