Northfield Mount Hermon and the Block Schedule (NMH Block Scheduling)

Hi all.

First, a big thank you to everyone who has posted such helpful information here over the past years. I have been on this site since this spring, and although this is my first post the site has been one of the most helpful resources in narrowing our search and pointing in the right direction. While our list has not been finalized, we have been able to look at a lot of schools in a much more educated manner than we could have managed without so many good suggestions.

Right now I am wondering about the block scheduling system of classes at Northfield Mount Hermon. I understand how it works, and do not have a particular bias one way or the other. I like the school, and my child is a fairly flexible and omnivorous learner so will be able to manage whatever system is used. However, are there other schools using this system? I am having a hard time finding out how widespread it is, or whether NMH is going it alone by using this system.

Any feedback or opinions on how well it works in practice would be welcome. I am sure there are some strong opinions out there.

Thanks again.

Different schools use different variants of block schedules. For example, at Concord, major courses meet three times a week (twice for eighty minutes and once for forty-five), so in any particular day you’ll have 3 or 4 classes, but you still have the regular number of courses per term (typically 5 majors and 1 minor). I think NMH’s 3 majors at time is fairly unusual.

Thank you, photodad. You framed it a bit better than I did. I think I was asking about programs similar in degree to NMH, as I know there are less extreme variants in place in many schools.

Thank you to those who have sent me a PM. I cannot yet PM back, so I cannot send personal thanks.

This is my first year at NMH and im doing just about right with the block system, at first it was a bit confusing, but now I think its amazing, if you have specific questions please send me a PM.
