I am a junior at a small high school in central Illinois. I am looking for schools that I should be looking at/considering for a major in political science.
GPA- 3.9 UW (my high school does not weigh GPAs because we do not offer AP or honors classes, but I have taken the hardest classes offered ie advanced math classes, history electives, online economics, and I will be taking all of the dual credit classes we offer: stats, advanced bio, calculus, and physics)
PSAT- have not received score
E.C.s- scholastic bowl, softball (varsity captain, varsity all years), golf, cheer (varsity all years) yearbook, student council, NHS, Big Brothers Big Sisters, youth group (church affiliated)
Class Ranking- My graduating class is going to be about 30 students and my school is not going to rank my class
Extra Thing- I paged for an Illinois senator
I am currently considering Northwestern (dream school) and George Washington University (other dream school) but both of these schools are very hard to get into and I am worried that I have no chance due to my lack of AP and Honors coursework. What schools should I look at? Is a school like Northwestern feasible?
On the topic of Northwestern, it is a well-respected and definitely a very competitive school. With that being said, one can’t really “chance” you considering and assuming you don’t have an SAT score and PSAT score yet. Your ECs also happen to be on the slightly weak side.
But don’t give up! You still have alot of time to improve! Your GPA doesn’t seem like it’s critically bad, and your “extra thing” seems to help.
Do note that price is also an important factor here, as well as financial aid.
Other lists of schools you should look at is in the link provided above.
I’m aware that Illinois has dropped the free ACT exam in lieu of the SAT. However, taking the ACT is an option. Some students do much better on the ACT.
NU superscores the SAT should you decide to take the test again.
