Hey guys! I applied for housing on February 13th, about a week after the housing app had been open to the incoming freshmen. Since then I’ve been reading a lot about the neighborhoods, and have read that pretty much everyone applies to be put in Northwest! Did I wait too long to be put into Northwest? I was hoping for Briscoe, but if I don’t end up there, where will I get put? Also, does anyone know when we find out where we will be living?
My preference rankings are:
- Enhanced
- Northwest
- Single
- Double
Lots of questions, but any input/info on any of them is appreciated! Thanks
Northwest is the most requested neighborhood by freshmen. That being said, since you asked for enhanced, your chances for Briscoe should go up because IU gets more money if you get enhanced housing. I’d count on it, but don’t get your hopes up too high either. You usually find out in late June or early July where you’ll be living. If you don’t get Briscoe, you’d probably either get McNutt or Foster, OR there’s the chance you’ll get put in a different neighborhood altogether. A lot of people who requested Northwest (except for Collins) got put into Southeast neighborhood, resulting in many angry phone calls for RPS.
It’s honestly not that big of a deal if you don’t get Briscoe. It’s the farthest dorm from classes and you’re dependent on buses for transportation, which can be a pain.
I thought for future reference, I’d say I got put in a single in McNutt. The housing app process seems a little messy, though. People who turned theirs in within 30 mins of it being out and requested to be in NW, and are business majors are ending up in SE. Really no way to “cheat the system” when it comes to housing, it’s pretty random.
It’s not random. The orders for neighborhoods (most to least) are NW, Central, and SE. Very few people request SE so they have to fill those rooms up too, although it’s not too bad. It’s far from Kelley yes, but the walk, especially during the fall, is very scenic. Plus, it’s close to Mother Bear’s and there are always buses that stop there. The closest dorm to Kelley is actually Wright (Central) not McNutt or Briscoe. Be thankful you got a single in McNutt though.
As for the turning in your housing app early thing, it’s mostly recommended so that people aren’t turning in their applications in like April. It might give you a small advantage, but for the most part I believe RPS processes them all at once.
I think random was poor word choice on my part. I just meant that there’s no guaranteed way of getting into any specific neighborhood. People who requested the same things before me ended up in SE, no rhyme or reason why I got it over them.
@datkid1 you said “Northwest is the most requested neighborhood by freshmen.” Why is that? Thanks.
@ohiovalley16 Northwest is close to Kelley, but also is known as the biggest party area. Closest to all the frats. That’s generally why it is so popular - the social aspect. Its also closest to assembly hall and the football stadium.
@ohiovalley16 Northwest has the “party dorms” at IU (specifically McNutt) and it’s close to the sororities and frats. It’s also where a lot of the athletes live since it’s close to the sport stuff. You get a few people who like it because it does have the Kelley Living Learning Center and business students tend to flock there, but in all honesty the dorms closest to Kelley are Wright and probably Collins.
