Northwestern, App State, or Brevard Summer Program

I am a junior in high school and a soprano looking for an intense summer music program for classical voice.

I already applied to the Cannon Music Camp and Brevard Music Center. However, there is a problem: I am not sure how beneficial either of these programs will be because I do not plan on attending Appalachian State, and the Brevard High School Voice Program has only been around for one year.

Would it be worthwhile to pay another application fee and apply to Northwestern's summer vocal program? Is it any better than the programs at Appalachian State or Brevard? What about financial aid----this is one of my greatest concerns--offered by Northwestern for the summer?

Thanks in advance!

I’m not sure I understand your question. I don’t know about the voice program, but MANY students who attend Brevard in the summer do NOT go to Appalachian State University when they go to college. Many of the college aged students at Brevard are not FROM Appalachian State.

I apologize for any confusion! Here are my concerns:

For Appalachian State

 1. I do not plan to attend college there, and I do not know how good the program is. Therefore, I do not know if it is worthwhile to go to Cannon Music Camp if I can go somewhere else.

For Brevard
2. The Brevard High School Voice Program has only been around for one year, according to a friend who attended last year. That explains why the Brevard website only lists one faculty member for high school voice–the program is so new.

Now, does anyone have any comments on my concerns? Would it be an improvement to apply to Northwestern’s summer camp?

I also repeat my question about the financial aid offered by Northwestern’s program.

Thanks again!

Regarding Northwestern’s financial aid policy, the FAQ’s portion of the programs page here [National High School Institute](http://www.northwestern.edu/nhsi/FAQ.html) states 38% of students receive some sort of aid.

You may want to dig deeper into that site and see if they stipulate how the aid is determined and allocated.

It is smart to apply to a number of programs, as acceptance is not guaranteed anywhere.

Some students match apps to faculty, discipline, genre, their perceived “level”. Some choose a different geographic location to get a broader sense of peer talent. Some use the experience to look at colleges/facilities where the opportunities are staged. Some return repeatedly to the same place, others vary choices every season.

You can search some of the links I’ve posted here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1061700538-post68.html</a> for specific info on those you’ve named. There may or may not be past experiences reported.

I guess it would depend on what your goals are. Are you looking for a program that will help you get into a specific school or do you just want to improve your singing? If Appalachian State improved your singing a lot, would it matter that you didn’t want to attend college there?

You may have missed the deadline for many programs. Tanglewood Institute deadline has passed. Interlochen’s priority deadline was Feb 1, but I think they are taking applications still. Walnut Hill is still taking applications, but their priority deadline is Mar 1. Oklahoma City University Vocal Arts Institute should still be taking applications.

A program could be new and still be a great program. Maybe some posters who have been to Brevard can tell you more about it.

Thanks, everyone.

Prefect: You bring up a great point. My goal for the program is to grow as a singer, take literature classes, theory classes, meet with decent faculty members, and gain confidence.

I did not apply to the competitive programs for a reason. Somehow, I do not think that I would feel comfortable in a competitive atmosphere. I also have a feeling that financial aid, if offered at all, must be very tight.

So, I repeat my original questions, but I also would like more information about the Brevard High School Voice Program–or any of the programs, for that matter. Please and thank you to any posters who have experience with any of the programs!

Oh, one more requirement!

I need secondary lessons in piano. I do not mind if there is extra cost, but four weeks-or-so without piano lessons is a long time.
