My son submitted his undergrad. application (and supplement) to Northwestern last week, but did not receive a confirmation email from the Admissions Dept. (He did receive a confirmation from the Common App's server for both the main application and the supplement.)

The other schools he has applied to have all sent some kind of confirmation email, as well as links to application tracker pages that show if anything is missing, etc. I've searched Northwestern's Admissions pages and can find no information about their policy on this.

Does anyone out there know, or have similar experiences?

I was concerned about this too since my son applied in November and never heard from Northwestern. I called the admissions office and spoke to someone who told me they don’t send emails and that applicants will be contacted in February if anything is missing from their file. So it would be interesting to hear more about the emails the previous posters received. Thanks.

It might take up to two or three weeks, though if you got a confirmation from the Common App then it should be fine. Northwestern’s probably just taking some time to process everything considering most applications are sent in now. If after two weeks your son still hasn’t gotten anything from Northwestern, then just email the admissions office.

Thanks for all the replies. My son’s guidance counsellor suggested calling them, which I did yesterday. A recorded message said that they could not presently check application status but would send an email on two conditions: when the application was complete, or (by mid-February) if something is missing.

So I’m guessing they don’t send any general confirmation emails until they have sorted applications into two buckets: complete and incomplete. Then they send a specific email depending on which bucket the application is in, what’s missing, etc.

Did anyone who reported receiving an email from Northwestern get something else (e.g. a general confirmation of having received an application, with no indication of whether the application was either complete or incomplete?)

They send out the email confirmation if they have all the materials for their review so if you didn’t receive the email that means that there might be a teacher rec or transcript or something else that is missing still. I think they will let you know through email if the package is missing something within a week or two.

I got my confirmation the next day.
If you don’t mind my asking, why did you have to ask for your son? I mean he isn’t good with computers or what?

intemister, I didn’t “have to” ask for my son. He’s good with computers. He just happened to be busy after school yesterday with an interview and a music group practice. I had a little down time and was curious… so I asked.

I received the Jan newsletter from the Engineering school from Dean Ottino. But that does not mean anything really. It comes because of email sign up.

My son had not receieved any response from NW and had sent his app in in November (after the RD deadline). Suddenly today he received an email from them about registering for a local interview. So that took six weeks.

I received a conformation email from the university saying that they had received my application the day after I applied, but it took two weeks for them to send me an email saying that my application is complete. If you haven’t gotten these emails I would call because they definitely send them.

I’ve got a confirmation from Common App, but haven’t heard anything from Northwestern… How long does it take for them to usually get back with an email? thanks in advance!

You get a letter when they receive EVERYTHING.
So if you didn’t get your letter yet, that means they didn’t receive your complete app (which includes your supplement, letters of recommendation, test scores, etc etc.)

I applied ed and I got my confirmation email around 2 weeks after I submitted my app.

Got my email confirming they’ve received everything! And I sent in my app on 12/26. But, I still haven’t got any username-password to log on to the Northwestern portal… Does NU not have that?
