Northwestern Class of 2023 Discussion Thread

This morning my friend and I went to see college counselor and asked her to contact NU. She called our rep. Rep didn’t have clue either.

She also said there’re 4 schools did poor job to their portal – Duke, NU, Dartmouth and Vandy. LOL.

@peacelove123 omg same! My birthday is the 21st so I was hoping NU decisions would come out the 20th. I mean, one of my other schools, UVA, will probably release the 21st anyway, but I am hoping for the best there.
Happy Early Birthday, BTW

Does anyone know how competitive it is to get into the theatre program? I heard they take a lot of students focused on acting, so I hope my interest stage management gets a boost, but I still am worried.

@peacelove123

You could expect a higher admit rate than the overall avg. I’d say +5% on avg

@peacelove123

I was just dropping in here to relive the angst of this time last year and saw your question. I’m a freshman Theater major at NU. I know they take appox 100 kids for the program. I don’t know whether your SM focus will give you an advantage in admissions, but I can tell you this: If you do get in here you will be VERY popular and will ALWAYS work. There are so many productions going on here all the time–it’s actually pretty mind-boggling how diverse and active the theater scene is at NU–and they are always fighting over SMs and techs to fill out the crews. So while I don’t know if it matters to the Admissions Office, I can tell you that your interest in stage management would make you a valuable commodity in the NU theater world. Good luck! Hope to see you next year.

@Junior3! So glad you stopped in and that you are happy!! Any insight on the prospective theater majors that have an interest in directing?

@Junior3 That’s so awesome to know!! I would most likely go there if I am admitted. Do you know how many people apply to the theatre program and how many of those are admitted? Would like to figure out my chances :slight_smile:

My scores are still there. 1540/36 mccormick

I’m new to the thread…does anyone have a feel for how much legacy helps at NU and if it is more of a help during the ED or RD round? Thanks!

@collegemomjam Not an expert but an applicant who is a legacy (parents both went there, as did other family members who Common App doesn’t ask about), and I was told it doesn’t help much. It’s definitely far from schools like Harvard where legacy is a very helpful factor. I don’t know about the difference between ED and RD.

Thanks @drumminggeek87. Good luck to you! I’m going to try to research this on other threads, as well.

@peacelove123 : Sorry, I have no idea how many declared Theater majors apply to NU, but like I said, there’s roughly 100 kids in the program, which matches what we were told during the application process. I was an RD admit, but I would guess about half the kids in my program were ED, which also matches the profile of the entire freshman class. So if the same holds this year, figure you’re vying for one of about 50 spots. Good vibes!

@penny1234 : You would not believe how much opportunity there is to do theater at this school, not just for majors but for anyone. In addition to the official Wirtz productions (2 or 3 each quarter), there are like a dozen student-run theater groups, each producing 2 or 3 shows a year, including straight plays, musicals, children’s theater, theater for special needs audiences, etc etc. Each year there’s an entirely student-produced musical and also an entirely student-written and produced ORIGINAL musical. There’s also some program here that develops new musicals, too. And that’s not even getting into the very large and active improv and sketch comedy scene here. So bottom line, there’s abundant opportunity at Northwestern for everyone–actors, techs, directors and writers. This place is heaven for theater. But it’s cold as hell.

anyone know when decision r coming out??

Yeah Its been discussed before @coniston1

@theguy1 i cant find it. when?

@coniston1 I believe someone said between March 15-22. Correct me if I am wrong.

when does NW come out?

Around closer to 3/22. No confirmed date, but expect 3/22

@Junior3 I am totally curious, but what do you plan on concentrating in? In my why NU I talked about wanting to be a stage manager and/or a producer, so I am more into the backstage stuff. If you’re doing acting, did you audition for the MT program?
