Northwestern Deferral, Next Steps?

Good evening,

I was deferred ED to McCormick and am thrilled to not have been rejected. Anyways, does anyone have any advice as for how to boost my application? I thought I’d take my subject tests again to get scores worth sending (last time was a 710 Math and 650 Chem), but the next date is well after the RD decisions are made. Should I retake my SAT? I currently have a 1510 (760 Math / 750 Reading). What else should I do to continue expressing interest and otherwise boost my application? It’s still my first choice and I still will definitely enroll if accepted.

Thanks in advance!

Your SATs are fine. Have your guidance counselor call the admissions rep for your area and see if you can get some feedback on your application. That will help you figure out what you need to address. Good luck!!

Thank you!

…Honestly, retaking the SAT maybe isn’t the worst of ideas…The 75% percentile is a 1580, and you want to be as close to that as possible (if not over it). 1510 is the average of accepted scores. And if you retake it and do worse, no matter, since they will only care about the highest score.

Same with ACT. Average is 33, 75% is a 34, and 25% is a 31.

Deferral at NU is actually really good. I heard that they only defer around 2% of their applicants and 50% of those get in RD.

Congratulations and good luck. In addition to talking to your counselor, consider drafting a letter detailing accomplishments since the ED app went in and expressing continued interest.

where did you hear this? Was it recently? I saw that stat too but not sure if it is true or not.
