Northwestern HPME Part 2

Oh man, gotta get back on track against Minnesota!
Student section back in town!
Brendan Smith gonna have another exciting pick-six to win the game?

So I just found out that my school is requiring all the counselor forms in by October 2nd. All of a sudden, no warning. I just put the HPME card into the mailbox today (because I was ■■■■■■■■ and didn’t think I needed to do it so early, obviously ><). There’s no way I can get the forms I need in time. Is it possible for someone to give me the forms I need for my counselor/teacher? I know technically I might not even get in, but I don’t know what I can do otherwise. >>

Just as a note, the basic stats I sent in are the following:
SAT I: CR - 760
Math - 770
Writing - 790
SAT II: Chemistry - 800
Math IIC - 800
Biology M - 800
4.0 GPA UW, No weighted GPA Available
Rank: 1/511
English 4 yrs AP
Math 4 yrs AP
Chem 2 yrs AP
Biology 2 yrs AP
Physics 1 yr AP
Spanish 4 yrs R
Chinese 3 yrs R

I don’t have that much medical-based experience (only volunteering at local hospital), but I have two research-based internships in the field of biology, so I don’t know about the likelihood of my getting an application.

you’ll get an application easy. im pretty sure app is just academics. extracurriculars is to get an interview.

The application is paper, so someone would have to scan in the form. I don’t know if they’ll accept scanned applications, though. I still have my HPME application from last year’s cycle which I never submitted (I might’ve filled it out, don’t remember), but I’m in college and it’s back at home.

How strict is your school about this? I know my school imposed a deadline but kids still turned in applications after that and the GC accepted them. Try and manipulate a way around it if you don’t get your forms in time cuz you’re the val ;P.

Ha, thanks for the help. So I talked with my counselor today and she said she’d let me work around the date, but could you tell me exactly what they ask for for the recs? Does the teacher/counselor send them in separately like normal recs? What do they ask for? I need to give my teachers a possible heads up, so anything would be appreciated.

I’m taking AP Chem this year and will take the Subject Test for chemistry in November. I’m not sure if my scores will get back in time for me to meet the postmark deadline, so is it o.k. if I send in the HPME application request card now rather than later.

Yeah that’s fine, the last chance for the SAT Subject test is the December test date. It says on the card don’t wait for the results send the card in (and then update them when you receive the scores) On my card I wrote “will take in oct/nov” Hope that helped. :)

I don’t remember exactly what they ask for, it has been about a year since I have looked at the application, but I believe there is a form they have to fill out in addition to sending in another copy of their recommendation letter to the medical school (instead of NU undergrad admissions). IIRC they also ask for a recommendation unrelated to science such as English.

I have a vague recollection of the essay questions too. One of them was something along the lines of asking if there was anything you did in the past that didn’t turn out like you planned and what you did about it, and another was a standard why medicine, and both together had to fit on two pages.

Hey guys, it’s been a while since I’ve been on. Something I heard at the HPME reception this year:

~40 accepted into the program
~20 enrolled

The primary reason for low enrollment was attributed to financial aid problems and the program director said that she is working on improvements in that area…

by the way, some (or most) of you should be clever enough to figure out who i am. If you do, feel free to message me on facebook with questions, etc.

I have received the HPME Application. Does anyone know what I should do to ensure an interview???

DO THE HUSTLE !!!
Doo doo doo da doo ta da doo doo …

(Do the hustle.)

You can’t do anything to “ensure” an interview… just represent yourself in the best way possible.

You are one of 800 who receive HPME application, 100 ~ 120 will get interview, nothing can “ensure” to have an interview. have to show “you are passionate about medicine”.

^ What are the essay questions on the application???

I have not yet submitted the request card becuz im waiting for my SAT2 scores.

^ I posted what I remember were the essay questions a couple posts above yours. Also, you don’t necessarily need SAT IIs listed on the request card to get an application if you have other strong numbers listed already.

Has everyone applied for HPME application request (which is due December 1st)? What are the pre-requisites to qualify for the application? (which sounds very… weird)…

I had questions about majors as well… How are majors influenced by the HPME program? Does one have to take academic major in order to stay in HPME? are there any requirements about the majors?

^ what do you mean by “academic major”? I think the available majors for HPME are any of the majors within Weinberg, engineering within McCormick, or CSD in Communications.

I think he probably meant specific academic major. The academic is just being used to describe a major at an educational institution.
