sorry never mind. i just saw jonthelin’s post.

Can you tell me if I am on the right track for admission to some good BS/MD programs (HPME, UMiami, Brown, etc.)? I realize that my SAT and ACT are a bit low but I am studying hard for them. Also, I think it would be a lot of fun if I could research somewhere. How do I find out where? Any other recommendations would be appreciated!

About me: I am an incoming eleventh grade at a public IB school in Nebraska.

Academics:
4.1 WGPA
3.9 UWGPA
10/539 Class Rank (top 2%)
ACT:31 (will retake, i just got finished with sophomore year; estimate: 33-34)
SAT 1:2050 (same note as ACT; estimate: 2250-2300)

AP Human Geography: 5
AP US History: 4

EC (not medical):
Chemistry Club: 1 year
Varsity Track: 1 year
President of South Asian Student Association
President and Founder of the International Sporting Club
Forensics (Speech) Team: 2 years (planning on four years)
Debate Team: 2 years (planning on four years)
National Youth Leadership Conference (2009)

Medically Related EC:
Hospital Volunteering: 250 hours
I am going to India for a month this summer to work in a hospital
I shadow a cardiologist once every week in the summer for 4 hours (I don’t know the total hours this will be)

Awards:
1st Place at Metropolitan Science Fair in bioengineering category (2nd place overall)

ok most of the people applying are the same…cred wise…but someone was talking about hospital research or something in another thread…does anyone know anything about that? how and where would you do that…considering i am going to be a junior and have time lol…but still want to start soon…

From Experience (Accepted to HPME Class of 2013)-will not be attending

Receive Application: Certain level of academic prowess (i.e. high GPA, test scores, challenging courseload)—> This will only get you the application for HPME

Getting Interview: Diverse and focused extracurricular activities (yes hospital volunteering and research will help, but HPME looks for a wide range of activities that portray an individual’s talent and passion that will help them become a successful doctor)—> This will hopefully secure you one of the ~120 interview spots (Essays are looking for very unique responses)

Accepted to HPME: This is the most challenging part. No amount of hospital volunteering, medical research, or academic success will guarantee you a spot. They want to know why you want to be a doctor, and the way you speak and depict your rationale makes the difference between an acceptance or a rejection. They want to see how your humanity plays a role in what you want to do as a doctor, which is key (possibly relate any personal experiences as this will help out a lot). So hopefully those of you who are applying to this program aren’t in it for the money otherwise that may be a problem.

P.S. Also be prepared to relate why a 7-year accelerated medical program is more beneficial TO YOU than a traditional 8 year program and why specifically HPME is right for you. Good luck all!

whos applying this year, and what are your stats?

what are you turning down HPME for? im guessing harvard/yale or something?

aw nvm. what state school are you going to?

Guess who’s coming to SPOOK Ryan Field this Halloween?

Hint #1: He turns 83 this December.
Hint #2: He wears glasses.
Hint #3: He is the winning-most major college football coach, currently one win ahead of 79 year old Bobby Bowden.

I recommend shadowing a doctor or doing a medical internship apart from volunteering because besides the essay, that is the only way they can see your interest in medicine.

What do you think my chances are for HPME?

also im a little unclear on the process. first you have to submit the HPME application request. then they will send you the HPME application, which you have to submit along with the common app by january 1st? and how many recommendations do they require?

well first you send your hpme request card, and then get an application 1-2 weeks later. i got mine and the recs are counselor and then a teacher that can attest to your writing, so they mean an english teacher. those are the only 2 recs. you should have the hpme app, the common app, and the northwestern supplement all postmarked by january 1.

turns out that its getting tougher and tougher to receive admission. i called one of the officers of this program. for last year:

1200 applicants
800 received hpme application
700 filled out application
100 got interviews
25 admitted

I need to send in an HPME request card in, but I haven’t taken the subject tests yet. What should I write where it asks for SAT subject test date/scores? just “will take?”

Also, in our school regular/honors classes are on a 4.0 scale A = 4.0 A+ equals 4.333 and AP classes are A=5.0 and A+ equals 5.333 so grades are weighted, what should I put as highest possible GPA?

Thanks

Dance, Your stats are very good. You have a solid chance. Apply and do well in the interviews. Interviews are highly critical.

Dance, good stats and NJ schools are beast. However, the ECs don’t really stand out. Why is your weighted gpa lower than your unweighted?

do you have any ideas of ecs i can do my this yr (my senior year) to improve my resume?

also, what do you think my chances are for other bs/md programs like tcnj, bu, and george washington?

This has become somewhat of a mantra of mine, but keep in mind that the most important aspect of the application process is showing the HPME admissions people that you are passionate about medicine.

I think you stand a good chance for TCNJ (accept 40 out of 225 or something) but BU and George Washington are a stretch. I don’t see why GW has a ridiculously low acceptance rate (something like under 1.5%) even when their med school isn’t that great compared to others.
