Northwestern HPME vs. Georgetown

I’ve been accepted to both NW’s HPME and to Georgetown. I want to study medicine however I find GU more appealing and I like DC a lot more than Chicago. I’m also super interested in Public Policy/Politics and think that GU would be a great opportunity to find some internships and job experiences within the DC area. At the same time, Northwestern’s HPME is an incredible opportunity and really reduces the stress that comes with med school apps.

Any Advice?

Northwestern makes much better sense, but that’s assuming you want to go to medical school.

Why do you find Georgetown more appealing than Northwestern? And why do you like DC so much more than Chicago? Those preferences seem strange to me.

Talking to current students from both schools I feel that Georgetown is a better fit. As far as the DC preference, I just enjoy the city more than chicago for some reason.

On a micro-level, I do not think Georgetown is materially different from Northwestern. They are mid-sized, diverse universities with a strong pre-professional feel. Perhaps you are more familiar with DC than you are with Chicago, but I have explored both cities thoroughly and found them both to be very special in their own unique ways. I am sure you will grow fond of Chicago over time.

As an aspiring physician, the HPME program is an unmissable option. I would not squander it.

HPME (i.e. guaranteed admission to Northwestern med school) is so much harder to get than an internship with some random Federal agency. There’s no comparison unless you don’t really think you want to be a doctor. If you go to GU, all the stars have to line up for you to have any chance to get into a medical school as difficult to get in as Northwestern medical school.

@johndonne26 If you prefer Georgetown, I think you should go there and let someone who really value the HPME (NU undergrad + medical school admissions) spot take it. From the perspective of scarcity, the HPME spot is much scarcer, but it doesn’t mean it’s necessarily for you (since you have preference for G’town).
