Northwestern: MaDE program

My daughter has been looking at Industrial Design. We came across the Product Design in the Segal institute at NorthWestern, specifically the MaDE degree. I love the thought of leveraging her technical strengths with design.

Some questions for anyone familiar with the program:
- how much creativity do you have in the classes? Are they mostly math/eng classes, or are you taught to sketch, to really think about the users and needs, etc?
- is the program and school super stressful and challenging?

We unfortunately found out late about the program and didn't get a chance to visit the school. The ID programs are so competitive to get into, that we are applying ED to Virginia Tech. We did get to visit it, and loved the school.

I know the majors are very different, and I wish we had time to really dig into the major at NorthWestern, but the deadline is too tight (VTech ED is Nov 1). I think I'm going to have her apply to Northwestern regular decision as backup. THen if Tech falls through and we get in, we will definitely visit.

Anyway, I'd love to learn more about this program, what it's like, and what people think of it.

I just read a bit about the program and from what I’ve gathered, it’s gonna have quite a bit of math and engineering courses. This is, after all, an engineering degree, albeit with quite a bit of the design component. There are sketching ccourses but they are not part of the core requirements. So that should also give you an idea about its orientation.
