Hi guys, Freshman here looking to learn more about the finance industry and sales. I have an opportunity to work for Northwestern Mutual selling life insurance and a pretty good opportunity to work for UBS (this is most likely unpaid and I'd be in the wealth management department).

Now I'm a really sociable guy who enjoys networking. But I HATE the fact that i'd be reaching into my own network to sell insurance. Now I could possibly do well and come to terms with myself with getting referrals from friends and people in my network rather than contacting my own friends, but that's the only uncomfortable thing I have towards Northwestern Mutual. I know it's a tough job. Plus I'll learn about many aspects of Finance from this internship, as well as mastering my skills in conducting sales, which is important in ANY job. And it pays at least $1000 if i don't get any clients. It seems like a decent internship.

Now with UBS, I interviewed back in another city where my school is but told the guy I'd like to live back home in the summer. He really liked me so he referred me to one of the offices down in my hometown (there's 4 UBS branches here). In addition, my parents have friends in this branch and there's also a lot of alumni from my university there. It might be paid, but I know for a fact the branch I originally I applied to where my school is was unpaid... so I'll assume this.

I'm interested in learning about finance, but on the less math heavy side of the industry. So from what i've learned so far Wealth Management may be a good fit for me. It's a good mix of sociability, sales, and financial planning. Plus UBS is a big name so it would be great to have a resume. But, when I first interviewed, I understand the UBS internship is primarily calling and reaching out to get new clients.

NM: Make more money than I can at UBS, plus I learn invaluable skills in sales and learn about financial planning

UBS: I think it may be more legitimate, but there's still cold calling. Bigger resume booster I believe. I think i'd still be working a 8-5 job that I would be with NM. Trying to only work 25-30 hours/week.

I'm trying to decide whether I'm going to focus in entrepreneurship or finance (im business) but I think NM will help strengthen the skills I need to be successful in entrepreneurship more so than UBS.

I know NM gets hammered and it's really tough to do well, but I need to decide if I'm going to commit to NM in the next week, or to start contacting UBS to try to secure an internship. I just don't want to waste my time this summer doing something when I could have taken advantage of better opportunities.
