Hey everyone,

I have an interview with Northwestern Mutual as an investment operations/finance intern. Anyone know if I should pursue this? Northwestern Mutual is a recognizable name, but does it really stand out? Would it look good on a resume?

only pursue it as your last option.

They actually wanted to recruit me for that position as well. You will be selling insurance to your close friends, family, and cold calling leads. This is a sales internship, and is 100% commission based. It’s great if you want to work in insurance sales coming out of college, but I refused to interview with them, as I want to do marketing research, and sales is not for me.

I have an interview with them as well and I am going to refuse it. I am an ENGINEERING MAJOR and they are hounding me to work with them. I feel as if the company doesn’t care about developing the intern. They are after your connections. My brother who was a Finance/Economics major interned for them and they had him contact friends, family and anyone he knew. He was one of the best salesman they had and he was even beating some full time employees. He did some calculations on the policies and the numbers they were using for advertisement seemed to be manipulated by his opinion. He went back to every single one of his clients and reported his findings and advised them to cancel their policies. By doing so he had to return all the money he got from commission back to the company. He knew that before hand, but he couldn’t stomach lying and manipulating his friends and family. To me, these two things have no place in an internship. They are after you to use your connections to sign policies and extend there databases. There are a lot posts online about similar situations as this and that right there is a good indicator that there is questionable things relating their business ethics.
