Northwestern Supplement

NU's supplement essay (Topic: Why NU?) has no max or limit on words or characters. I was wondering, how long should I make this to be?

My Common App essay is between 520-550 words, but as of this moment, the supplement is around 560-580 words. Is it okay to have a lengthy supplement essay if they don't specify its length?

it is best to write around 500-700 words. I mean heck, you expect those admission counselors to read 3 pages of writing ~ 2k words? Sure, your writing might be awesome, but if I were them, just finding out that you write 3 pages on a subject would make me not want to read it – especially when I have thousands of others to read.

I was wondering about this as well, b/c when an admissions counselor came to visit my school, he said “2 Paragraphs” and I was blown away. I had already written 600 words and now I am at a loss…

I only have 379 :)

Do they want us to get straight to the point?

I have an intro and conclusion that go well together, should I just toss them aside and keep the key reasons?

How i wrote these small essays was start with some descriptive stuff: "The professor of the class i visited had a shock of white hair and seemed to be able to spin physics out of his mouth like poetry. blah blah the fall leaves blah blah.

Then link them to some more abstract stuff “I just realized that NU was the right school for me. Why wouldn’t i love to go to a school with top faculty, friendly students, etc”

my two cents
