Northwestern University Housing Problem

I’m sorry I wasn’t meaning to imply that there was a true shortage (i.e. NU has NO housing for freshman)-- just that the reason less people are getting their optimal choices (below even 3/4th preference on their housing list) this year must be the construction.

Yeah, they didn’t overenroll. They’re simply saying that regular residence halls don’t have capacity left, i.e. less people enrolled in residential colleges than expected. ISRC (International Studies Residential College) is fine. Most people end up loving it because of the community and location.

@thumper1 @Crimsonstained7 When I called and spoke to housing. They said neither of those things.

It happens pretty much every year that people get put into residential colleges they didn’t apply for because the University didn’t have room in places like Allison and Elder.

Hello, my son just came home from summer job and hasn’t received a dorm confirmation. On my tuition bill 1835 hinman is listed is that his dorm He’s an engineering major not sure if he should worry. No roommate info nothing.
Interfaith thing is a little weird to me and he really wanted to be in north campus. Any sugguestions?

Hmm, I don’t know how housing is being done this year, so it may be different from my year, but here’s what I can offer.

We got to pick our dorm with a priority number. Whatever was left by the time you picked was what you could take. It sounds like maybe that isn’t what’s happening this year. If the tuition bill says Hinman, that is going to be where he is currently located. Some people end up getting the chance to move to a different dorm. A few of my friends did freshman year a few weeks into school. As for roommates, the way we did it, we pulled in a roommate with us while we picked rooms, or if you didn’t have a roommate, then you’d pick last and just be stuck with whoever else was in there. I pulled in my roommate, so I don’t know when you normally find out roommate stuff if you didn’t pick one. I would email housing and ask how he can get in contact with his roommate, just to coordinate things like a fridge, tv, etc. if he wants those.

If he’s not on a certain area of the 5th floor, then he’s not in the Interfaith hall. Even if he is, there is absolutely 0 forced participation, so he can just live there as a normal dorm. They have a pretty cool program though. They just have bi-weekly (I think) discussions about people’s beliefs and such, so it’s kind of a cool interchange of thoughts. I went once and they were welcoming of everyone’s backgrounds.

I lived in Hinman freshman year (and will be living there again this year), and I knew quite a few engineers. In fact, my CA was an engineer freshman year. It involves a bit more walking, going up north (although campus is like .8 of a mile long, maybe a mile, so it’s not bad), etc. However, I know many engineers on South campus who liked it because it kept them from feeling insulated amongst engineers and hard science type people. So it’s not really that bad if he ends up stuck down south. Personally, my major has taken me up north a decent amount, and I prefer south because it’s where a lot of events and cultural things are. Plus better food on south campus.

Ultimately, you should email housing and see what the options are if he really wants to move. There’s probably open space in some of the halls.

Thank you for the info it’s quite a learning curve. I’ll tell him to email the housing department tomorrow. Thx again

No problem, for the most part housing will be a tiny bit slow but pretty helpful, at least that’s my experience.

Hey my son called housing, there was some problem they confirmed, he never got any of the emails to go through the process of room collection. Crazy! He asked to move ( not sure it will happen) hope they can help him, but do you know anything about the Lshaped rooms in hinman?

Haha, oh yeah, the Lshaped rooms are interesting. Right next to the kitchenette usually I think. They’re maybe a bit smaller than normal, but as long as he’s a bit creative it works out well. My friends lived in that room freshman year and made it so it didn’t really seem any smaller. They’re fun to me.
