Could you please help me narrow down on my housing choices?

Here's my wishlist (in decreasing order of importance).

single room is necessary (medical condition)

south campus

dorm without a huge "party" reputation (I'm a quiet person)

mid-size to large dorm

If possible, close to the Econ department...

I probably won't get everything on my list, that's okay! The top few are the most important.

I've already seen the Housing Guide...but I'd like an unbiased perspective. Please provide your suggestions? :)

Thanks!

not sure if there are singles in there, but i hear north and south mid quads are pretty quiet and in a solid location.

Thanks! I will research that…

NMQ and SMQ have a couple singles, but I think they’re only for upperclassmen (or at least thats how it is on my floor).

I have a friend who absolutely needed a single for his freshman year so the administration just put him in Plex.

Foster Walker (plex) fits your list pretty well: its all singles and on south campus and people keep to themselves. Its also probably the largest dorm on campus and its literally across the street from the econ department.

yea plex is perfect except it’s not really on south or north campus rather a central location, which is why most people like it…

On NU’s housing website, Plex (Foster-Walker) is not available as an option for freshmen…

Any other suggestions? Thanks for all the help so far :)

i think if you tell them you have disabilities and want plex you can probably get it. also, you can apply for the interfaith section of plex which is open to freshman

Thanks. I’ve already seen that link :)

For NMQ:
“Mostly everyone is a sophomore who already has an established group of friends and isn’t looking to make relationships with freshman. I IMPLORE YOU to NOT LIVE IN NMQ.”

For SMQ:
“At SMQ not only do you get to live with a roommate but also with mice. The water fountains often don’t function, the showers often don’t get hot water, the ceilings leak with water from the bathrooms above, the vending machines steal your money and so do the laundry machines and there is no machine to put money on your WildCARD in SMQ.”

“It’s a shame that we have to pay thousands to live in such a horrible place. I hope housing reads this so that they can actually start fixing students’ basic needs of living.”

How seriously should I take these quotes? Are these exaggerations or true reflections of the conditions at SMQ and NMQ?

I’ve only lived in SMQ but SMQ and NMQ are mirror images of each other.

I haven’t seen a single mouse my year here and we’ve only had issues with hot water for about a 2 week span during which the water would change from extremely hot water to extremely cold water but that got fixed eventually.

I’ve also never had a problem with the vending machines or the water fountains not working and since they switched over from Cash stripe to Much Money for laundry, you pretty much don’t need a cash to card machine anymore.

Slightly fewer than half the students on my floor are sophomores and although most of them generally have their own friends, the freshmen definitely do get along with each other.

It does bother me though that SMQ is tier II housing when its not worth the extra cost.

“For a freshman its very hard to socialize here without being segregated into ISRC-land the rest of your life.”

Again: Are these quotes exaggerations or true reflections of the conditions at ISRC?

@sainclaire: Thanks for the input! If you don’t mind me asking, did you live in SMQ recently? (Because I’m guessing the living conditions change from year-to-year.)

I guess the way I phrased my reply made it a bit ambiguous but I’m a freshman still living in SMQ (but only for another 2 weeks).

I don’t see how the quote about ISRC could be possible. If you “segregate yourself” into “ISRC-land,” that’s your choice. Nothing’s stopping you from socializing at the dorm AND joining other groups on campus. It MAY be true that many of ISRC-ers’ closest friends are also from ISRC, but I think that’s typical of any dorm. You’re most likely to make friends with the people you see the most often. Also, while it’s true that ISRC-ers do have a reputation for being quiet and studious and generally keeping to themselves (a reputation that I’m not sure is even warranted in the first place), the fact is, if you choose for your social life to revolve only around your dorm, that’s your choice. To me, that quote is implying that if you participate in the dorm, you’ll be forcibly chained to ISRC forever, which is blatantly false. You’re ALWAYS free to join clubs and activities and groups of friends outside of the dorm you live in, and people do.

Sorry if I’m not explaining this clearly. It makes sense in my head, lol.
