My son was accepted to both. His interest is Economics, International Economics, with an interest in the political field and perhaps consulting. His goal is great undergraduate education that leads to a top notch grad/law school. I know that NW has a premier econ program and Gtown certainly has its advantages for the political arena. Looking for opinions. Also, what would be a great companion major with an economics degree. Finance, polysci, business etc...? Thanks in advance.

Georgetown, no question. Northwestern is an excellent school, no question about it, but Georgetown has the whole package. The location is wonderful, right in the Nation’s Capitol, making it great for politics, and economics, too. Not to mention that Georgetown is a Jesuit University. If you’re Catholic, it’s a bonus. If you’re not, then it’s no big deal because religion is not forced on you. For me it’s no question: Georgetown all the way.

Thanks for the advice. This is a tough decision. Northwestern Econ is supposed to be tops. Still have time to consider.

Georgetown is an awesome school, but I think NU is overall just a stronger school. I wouldn’t put too much weight on rankings, but there’s a reason why NU is ranked ~10 spots above Georgetown in USN.

Also department rankings:

econ rankings:

political science:

Georgetown’s location, if your interest is in government, certainly can’t be beat for internship opportunities. But kimfuge88 is correct. Political Science is academically stronger at Northwestern. Economics there is world class, levels above that at Georgetown. This is just as true at the applied MBA level, with NU’s Kellogg typically top 5 in every objective assessment, again, levels above McDonough.

Having said that, Georgetown recruits well among consultancies and kids place very well into grad programs. I’d suggest he follow his heart to whichever school seems to fit best.

We are visiting both this weekend. That should tell a lot.
