Is anyone here familiar with Northwood? I know that it has quite a good reputation for winter sports. What about the academics, residential life, etc.?

Thanks!

Bumpity bump bump…

Hi Vahmontah
My daughter went to Northwood School. She graduated in 2009 and is now a student at Hamilton College. She went to N’wood for 3 wonderful years! One of the best decisions we made, though it was hard to send her off at 15. She played hockey and currently plays at Hamilton. She got a first class education, had a great high school experience, and we have nothing but praise for the school!
Good luck with your decision

Can you give a description of this school? strong academics? Arts emphasised? Sports emphasied? Traditional (dress code, sit down dinners) or not so much? Who is it a good fit for?

Thanks Mom03. Northwood is appealing due to its emphasis on winter sports, primarily, and access to a solid education. My major concern is that my son might “outgrow” the school, as it’s relatively small - both in terms of number of students and the one primary building that houses dorms, classrooms, dining hall, admin offices, etc. How do the kids cope - especially in the winter - with such a small space?

I would strongly suggest a visit! Lake Placid is a charming town and a short walk from campus. The size was a benefit as far as I was concerned. Each student is seen as an individual and is known by the faculty. There are many advantages to going to a smaller school. I’m not sure what you mean by “outgrow”.
Though the main building houses boys dorms, etc. it is quite large and has many wings. It has a well stocked library, classroom wings, auditorium, school store, movie lounge and more. There is a separate science building with labs. The art center is also in a separate building and has recently been remodeled.
The recent matricualtions include everything from Ivys ,Little Ivys to large state schools.
It is a tough decision and there are many choices. I’m sure you will and your son will make the right one.
