this is such a stressful time for everybody…i wish you all the best of luck. try not to get too caught up on any decision, be it an acceptance, rejection, or waitlist - these colleges can’t know us as people, so don’t let their decisions dictate how you think about yourself. i know it is hard to remember sometimes, but we will all be happy in the end. stay strong and good luck!

General Comments:

Decision: Waitlisted

I saw before that someone with awesome scores/siemens finalist was waitlisted at NU and still accepted at MIT.

In my case, I got a Likely Letter from Columbia College (international student) and still got waitlisted…the whole process is so random XD
it seems that i didn’t really show enough interest for NU (true, I wasn’t going to go there anyways…i’d have gone to columbia anyways if I were to choose from the two schools) and i think they waitlisted some exceptional applicants who were qualified enough to be accepted at other top-tier colleges to maximize their yield.

Anyways, Congrats to those who got in, and don’t give up hope to ppl who’ve been WLed/rejected. Maybe the adcoms think that u guys are too qualified to come to NU LOL

^Please be respectful to those that got in. Part of what makes you qualified is to write a very good application, not just having top scores/awards. If your “Why NU” essay was weak, then you were not “over-qualified”. You don’t know what that MIT admit did with his NU application. For example, maybe his NU essay was too cookie-cutter. Yield protection works only if it’s done on a mass scale, not just on a few kids. Due to the subjective nature, it’s normal to see small number of HYPMS admits get rejected by schools like Northwestern, Duke, Rice, or Vandy…etc. Until you see large number of HYPMS kids getting rejected by NU, you shouldn’t be so quick to speculate.

I’m sorry if you were offended…I didn’t mean it, seriously (apparently it was a crude attempt at a lame joke XD…I thought that u understood my “tone” when I said LOL at the end)
As for my “speculation”, I’m not saying that it’s true: i’m just trying to say that its definitely possible (I saw some ppl here, who were waitlisted, with HYPSM-level stats. I’m assuming, though, that their essays were also as good). For someone who’s competitive enough to get in to MIT, there seems to be another reason (assuming that his NU essay was decent) that he got WLed by NU (not saying that NU is inferior, just that it is rather uncommon for one to be accepted at MIT but not at NU). And, you seem to suggest that my essay was weak, which may not be the case (IMO, I spent some time writing it).
