I am a California Community College student (Orange Coast). I completed two courses this summer and this fall will be my first regular semester. I want to transfer to UC Berkeley and I want to know what I can do to maximize my chances of getting accepted other than getting good grades.
What can I do right now including work/volunteer experience, talking to admission at UCB, clubs, etc.?
Also, what will completing the Honors Program do for me as a transfer student?

I’m in the same boat as you. I’m actually on this forum before I get ready for my first class haha! What’s your major if you don’t mind me asking?

Also, you can try to join Club Cal. From what I’ve heard there aren’t that many benefits but maybe it is different for each person. I’m still waiting for a response (I hope I didn’t get rejected; I’m low income AND first generation).

Do volunteer work /internships related to your major. For example, I’m a PoliSci major and right now I’m doing volunteer work at the local Chamber of Commerce and also I’m applying for the Governer’s Office Internship next semester.

I’m not sure about the Honors Program, I took the assessment test at my school and it was recommended but honestly how can a multiple choice test assess my essay writing skills? Personally I think I’m terrible lol. If you get a 4.0 in an Honors program you might get priority and not to mention possibly get invitations from Honor Societies.

Like I said, today is my first real semester (after previous summer) of community college so I’m not 100% positive if what I’ve said is right. Good luck.

Typically GPA is weighed higher than honors classes. If you can get a high GPA and take the honors classes, then that is the best option.

As for extracurriculars. think quality, not quantity. A club related to your field of study or even better an internship related to your field of study will suffice. Volunteer work related to your field of study also would help. Try to get one or two solid long term commitments and stick with them.
