Ok ive been studying for the math sections using my barrons 25th edition book but im not doing so well. I took a diagnostic test and found that my score was very low in math like in the 400s even though i got 560 on math on my first sat. But lately as im doing these math practices and sections ive been getting more than half wrong and im starting to get nervous about taking the sats and feel as though i will do worse on the math than i ddd the first time when i retake the sats in oct. Is this normal or should i worryy:(

First of all, take a deep breath. You need to regain your confidence. Barron’s is typically harder than SAT, in my experience, so let that give you a little bit of breathing room.

Now, a few questions:

Are you finishing the sections?

Do you care more about being accurate on a few questions or completing many questions?

When you grade yourself, do you go back and rework the problems to see where you went wrong?

Do you study problems like the ones you missed in order to learn the concepts better?

Yes im finishing the sections and i try hard to be accurate and not just complete the whole thing, and sometimes i run out of time so i need to work on that. But i do look back on the questions i got wrong . I just dont understAnd, im ussually good at math, ive gotten As in all my math classes:( im scared i might do worse the next time i take the SATS :(

Step one: Stop finishing the sections. The math questions get harder as the sections progress. Make sure you’re getting the earlier ones correct since they’re all worth the same amount. I’ve never recommended to any of my students scoring below a 600 to try to finish a section. It just leads to silly mistakes. If you’re usually good at math, then I’m guessing this is what you’re doing. Try slowing down for a practice test and worry less about finishing than making sure everything you do makes sense, is written down on the paper (so you’re always conscious of what you’re doing), and of course is correct.

Stressing, however, won’t help. So between practice tests, seek out instructional material for the topics you’re making the most mistakes with.

Wow thanks!

SAT math is just weird. It doesn’t really test your math ability. It just tries to trick you. I am also really good at math and I had a lot of trouble with the SAT. I would suggest taking the ACT, because its math problems aren’t meant to trick you, and if you are good at math you should be able to do well.
