Not Exactly "chances", but advice needed.

this is NOT for me. it's for my sister, who is now a junior in highschool.
she takes many IB & honor courses, and a decent gpa, but we are worried about her ecs and SAT scores.

SO, can you all please write down an ideal scores & number of ecs for one to get into
*stanford
*princeton
with a lil bit of reach and maybe
* UCLA
* UC Berkley
* Harveymudd
* Caltech???

it's more like an opposite of what happens here. but any help will be gratefully appreciated. thanks!

Haha truly opposite, hard to say. But i'd say.. [just my point]

SAT:
Stanford: 2300+ Ideally
Princeton: 2300+
UCLA: 2100+ [instate]
UC Berkeley: 2100-2200+ [instate]
Harveymudd [2100+]
Caltech [2200+]

EC's:
stanford: perhaps president of a group or two. student government. some sports?
princeton: same as above
UCLA/Berkeley/Harvey: .. hm.. a bit of everything i guess. Perhaps student council or something. community service.
Caltech: something related to science. "science fair winner" etc.. "researched with blah blah blah"
good luck to your sis =]

um, the above poster....Harvey Mudd and CalTech are both going to want perfect 800's on the math section. The mean math scores for Harvey are 760-800 (75% of those accepted did better than 760.)

Those aren't hooks. Princton and stanford want you to have somehting more than student government.

i agree.........

It's all a crapshoot with Stanford/Princeton.

BUMP!!!!!!!!!!!

and oh yeah, my sis looks hopeless then. she's got NOTHING...nothing but a decent GPA. her SATs not even on the 2000s yet.....oh no....

PrEpKiD:

UCB/UCLA:

Weighted GPA: 4.25
UC GPA: 4.15
SAT I: 2100
SAT II: 700/700
Honors courses: 19
ECs: Well-rounded in academics and athletics

Well rounded for the last four schools, but she needs more than that for Stanford and Princeton.

thanks. any more?

BUMP!

Actually your sister would need a higher SAT score at Caltech than at Stanford and Princeton.

Caltech has the highest average SAT scores, I believe.

What is the UC GPA? how is that calculated?

UC GPA gives special weighted points to AP courses and certain honors courses. While a normal 'A' would be a 4 pointer, a weighted 'A' would be a 5. There's a list for cali schools

'decent' gpa is not good enough for the top schools above. She needs a 'stellar' gpa.

Everyone from my hs going to Berkeley and UCLA has a 1800-1900 SAT score. And Caltech takes in some of the highest SAT scorers in the country, at least much higher than Stanford and Princeton.

i see...
wow, UCLA with 1800-1900? that doesn't happen much where i live...

anyways, her SAT's in the 1900s at the moment as far as i know. her GPA's around 3.7~3.9, but keep in mind that most of her classes are IB, AP, and honors.

i'm worried about her ecs. she's been volunteering for our church's special ed every week, but that's about it- she's done golf for a year or two...
however, she's one of the peer counselors at her school and she has also participated in the solar boat event which took place with students from many different schools. she's refusing to start any clubs because she knows that the college admissions officers will know that it was for the aps.
any more ideas?

bump! 10 char.

Caltech: 2400

no joke

man....she might end up at a community college like this!
