Not exactly hopeful, but Chances at Columbia ED, U of Chicago?

Hi! I just discovered College Confidential and have found it to be a great resource so far. My senior year is approaching fast, so I'm going to be starting to work on those applications. I've got a handful of schools that I'm interested in that I know I will be accepted to, so today I'm just inquiring about my chances at what I know are my reach schools. Any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Right now the only Ivy League I'm planning on applying to is Columbia. I visited the school this summer and absolutely fell in love with it. I'm intrigued by the University of Chicago as well. Thoughts?

so far so good, just retake the sats to aim for 2200+. and you should be fine

Thanks for the response. Any other ideas about chances?

I don't think Varsity Letters matter much.

^ I don't think you know anything.

I think that you have an excellent chance at U of Chicago. Your grades and SATs definitely put you in the running. They have an excellent Division III athletic program and a burgeoning arts and music scene, so both of these could be hooks for you. But visit the school first and see if it is a fit for you. Interview there and show a passion if you really want to go there. It is truly an exciting school to attend.

UChicago looks great for you. I know they place more emphasis on grades and academics than standardized tests like SAT/ACT so looks good IMO. Columbia is Columbia so you never know.

I'm a Chicago student-- I don't like giving out "chances" but I will say your profile is in the range of admitted students. Chicago ignores the writing section and SAT II's completely and does not put all that much faith in SAT's.

Chicago and Columbia are very similar and very different. While both are in major cities, both have a core curriculum, and both are now ranked ninth in US News, the schools have very different physical feels and very different student bodies. It sounds worth your while to apply to Chicago, but make a visit before you decide you want to attend.

I think if you get your SATs 2150+, you'll be fine. Plus some good grades in SAT II's would guarantee a place in UChicago, and you should try for Columbia, good luck!

^^^

Chicago does not look at SAT II's, so there is no way that good SAT II's would secure a spot there.
