Not feeling smart enough to be here :(

B-girl:
(1) You got into UCLA so you are smart enough.
(2) Most students feel overwhelmed during freshman year.
(3) Use all resources like tutors, OH, TA’s and that brianiac down the hall who
loves to show off
(4) Block out your study time days ahead and STICK TO IT
(5) Remember–this too will pass.

So I too am feeling a bit screwed at the moment.

I’m taking history 9D, and I just got my first paper back. Our grade is 20% Discussion, 20% 1st paper, 20% Second Paper, and 40% Final.

Well I slaved away on that paper for days, and I got a 65% on it. Curved to a C+.

Where the hell do I go from here? I feel like I’m screwed, I went to the TA who corrected it and got some advice, but I just feel like crap right now. I want to go home. The next paper is due next wednesday on the 14th and I am afraid to even start it now. I just can’t see myself pulling off a B or an A in this class if I got a 65. :(

So… you’ve lost about 7% off of your final grade. All hope is not lost!

Asura, like mme-lin pointed out, with 7% gone, an A may be difficult, but a B should be still feasible. You should especially go to your TA before your next paper is due this time with your thesis and a couple of your main arguments in mind to see if maybe its a valid route or throw some ideas back and forth if you’re still in the early process of the paper, but still with some thesis in mind.

Asura, have you taken advantage of the tutoring and other assistance that is available?

I went to go talk to my TA, and he read my last paper for me and pointed out what the major problems were. He also gave me some good tips on writing the new one, and some advice on how to avoid the mistakes I made on the first paper. Plus he is the grader for this one, and i’m hoping that he will take into consideration the effort I’m putting in (probably wishful thinking, but one can dream). My main problems were I didn’t analyze enough, and the overall style was too question and answer. If I spend more time analyzing on this one, and try to make it more cohesive, I should be able to pull off a good grade.

In any case, it’s due wednesday, and I finished the book this past tuesday. I plan on spending most of tomorrow morning thinking about what I’m going to say and looking for quotes. Then hopefully I can start writing in the afternoon, have a rough draft done by sunday night, and spend monday and tuesday polishing it. Considering most of the class isn’t even halfway in yet, I think I’m in decent shape.

In addition, the professor says there’s a pretty solid curve on everything, so if I do well on this, and I do well on the final, I’m hoping an A- might still be attainable.
