Not given SAT, taking a gap year, what are my chances for the next academic session?

I'm currently studying in class 12 and will be giving my cbse board exams in a month (March 2014) . I wish to study in the US. The problem is I havent given any SAT exams and I was thinking of taking a gap year instead. Will the colleges in the US accept my 2014 board marks next year and the SAT marks that I will give this year?
I'm a bit worried about taking a gap year . I'm in fear I wont get any colleges next year. Please give me enough information about the gap years and how much it will affect or benefit my college admissions.

Plus, I did not get good enough marks during the class 12 exams. However I have improved much in the preboards where I got around 65-70% in comparison to the 50-60% of the previous exams. And hoping to get around 80% in boards.
Do I stand a chance?
What is the criteria for admission in US colleges? Do they see the marks received in the whole year or just the boards?
Is there anything else they see except school marks and SAT ?

Please respond.

How colleges view gap years depend on what you did during the gap year. There is also the question of what extracurriculars did you do in high school.

Taking a gap year is fine but try to get an internship pertaining to your major or interests during it. Colleges want to know that you are still focusing on your education during the year off.
