Not giving much parental information

According to "Acing the College Application" it's beneficial for a student to not put what your parents' jobs are and how much education they had so colleges won't "judge" you based on your parents. Like for example, if your parents both have pH.D and have really high paying jobs, they would be questioned if you have C average and weren't involved in a lot of ECs.

Is this true? Is it perfectly ok to not put any information about your parents other than their names on your parental information section?

Okay, this is an OLD thread, but in light of the release of the 2010 Common App, I would like to bump it. Any ideas? My parents are college grads.

If you falsify information or leave too much blank, it can only hurt you. The schools are going to find out from your W2s anyways. You mightaswell be honest upfront.

“Like for example, if your parents both have pH.D and have really high paying jobs, they would be questioned if you have C average and weren’t involved in a lot of ECs.”

Alternatively, coming from a two PhD parent household might make you a more attractive candidate, because of assumed role modeling.

The fact is that all information on an application can be perceived both negatively and positively. Since you don’t know the biases of the application readers, you have no way of knowing whether your particular information will help or harm. Thus, answering all questions truthfully is likely your best bet, because omitted information is almost invariably a red flag.

Yeah, I’m sure it could look bad if you leave out information. I just found it interesting that a high-price college counselor said to give the minimum parental information possible.

Both my parents are blue collar with neither of them even getting into college (My dad didn’t even graduate High School). Should I put the info on the app or would it look bad?

^It would not look bad (first generation college can be a slight leg up, even). Put it down.

Thanks! I’m so clueless about the process >.<
