If your parent doesn't work, do you just leave that section blank on the common app? Also if your dad passed away, do you need to fill any of the Parent 2 section out except for his date deceased. And finally last question...for the additional info section, is it a good idea to write about your hardships you've faced the past couple of years or should I just stick with a resume. Due to financial reasons and other family problems, I've had to stop several activities that I was extremely involved in, so should I mention those. Thanks!

My Mom was upset when she saw the "occupation" part of the application. She said it really isn't their business and in my opinion, it isn't.

I think it would be good to stick on there that you have had financial and other problems on the application, that way they don't see you dropping out of clubs and other ECs for no reason.

Hope this helps you out :)

Yes it does help, thank you!

The reason colleges care is that parents' occupations gives colleges an idea of the advantages or disadvantages that you've had in your life, and that helps the college assess your application.

Clearly, a stock broker or professor or doctor's kid could be expected to have had more advantages that would have impacted their education than would a custodian or factory worker's offspring, who is unlikely to have had access to tutors, high level summer camps, extensive travel, and other enrichment opps.

Leave the field blank if you wish, but if your concern is that your parents' job is low level, leaving off that info may hurt you.
