Just curious, what exactly is the point of the parents info section of the commonapp

The whole

where were your parents born, where do they work, what degree do they have

What is the whole purpose of that entire section

I can't understand how any of that is important in the application process

I guess they want to see if you’re a first generation student or can get a scholarship from the place your parents work? I’m not sure either!

Colleges want info about your upbringing to give context to your achievements. Consider student A who says she grew up w/o a father (unknown) and mother works as at Walmart, was an immigrant from Haiti. The student attends a blighted inner city school but pops out a 4.0 GPA, works at Burger King and gets a 31 ACT.

Compare another Sudent B whose father is an engineer (PhD from Purdue) and mother is a JD from NYU. Their income is about $600K per year – she attends an affluent HS and is a varsity Lacrosse player and has photography as a hobby. She’s a 4.0 student, has plush summer internships and a 33 ACT.

Can you understand why student A is more attractive than Student B?

^^lol; unless, of course, the college in question is need aware…
