Not sure if I have any chance.

Hi,

This was the first school I applied to. Technically I applied to UofMinnesota first, but I didn’t write anything, submit letters of rec, or do a personal statement (accepted into College of Science and Engineering). I know how highly competitive GeorgiaTech is, and I rushed through my personal statement and should’ve written something better for my “Why GeorgiaTech?” supplement. I’m just wondering if I should even hold out any hope for this school. Be blunt, please. Am I more likely to get rejected from this school than accepted?

My stats:

Public High School, Class of '18
Majoring in Chemical Engineering
Chinese

GPA: 3.9 W, 3.3 UW (weak, yes, i know, trust me)

Classes this year:

CSIPH
AP Microeconomics
AP Government & Politics
AP Enviro
AP Lit
Calculus (I take this class at my local college instead of my high school)

Classes last year:

AP Lang
Physio H
Spanish 3 CP
CPUSH
AP Psych
Math Analysis H

Also took a Chem course at my local college over the summer (lecture + lab)

SAT: 1530 (Math 790, Reading 740)
Subject test: 770 Math II (they don’t look at this but I thought I’d submit it anyways)

Letters of Rec: my chem professor from over summer, talked about how willing i am to work with others and how dedicated i am.

EC:

Volunteering with the Conejo Valley Botanic Garden(CVBG) (4 years)
Collaborated with the CVBG to start own non-profit organization Project ReGreen (I’ve been in the local newspaper a few times and have worked with several school districts)
Interned with OptionCare Home Infusion services
Single-handedly devolping an ARCGis Database for the CVBG
Captain of Lacrosse team (Junior, Senior)
Worked as a tutor in English and Math for Kumon (2 years)
Treasurer of Student Surgical Club (Junior, Senior)

Very unlikely to get in. Your GPA is too low.

The Common Data Set for Georgia Tech tells you, under Part C7, that GPA and the rigor of your high school record are “very important” academic factors considered for freshman admission, whereas standardized test scores and your application essay(s) are “important” academic factors considered for freshman admission. Extracurricular activities are considered as “very important” non-academic factors. When I attended an Open House at Georgia Tech earlier this year, the Admissions Director, Rick Clark, echoed these points of emphasis — and primarily that GPA means more than standardized test scores to the Georgia Tech Admissions Office.

I concur with the poster above that your chances of admission are poor – especially if you are an OOS applicant. Your GPA is not competitive with the likely applicant pool (especially if you are OOS). So you have a problem regarding a “very important” admissions factor.

If you have been accepted into the University of Minnesota’s College of Science and Engineering, you should be pleased that you have an excellent school at which to further your education.

@itsgettingreal17 @gandalf78 thanks for getting straight to the point, i’m almost confident i’ll get rejected come January 13th. that’s too bad, but at least i know how to fix my common app and supplements accordingly. i didn’t highlight the extensive programs and projects ive started and developed. i dislike the thought of going to minnesota, but if worse comes to worse and i don’t get into my other choices, i guess ill be there!
