Hi there,

As an undergrad I recently enrolled in Journalism 215 with the understanding that there are no course restrictions. There is only one class offering and I have already enrolled in the class. Problem is, the professor emailed me saying that there are too many Journalism grad students that want to take the class and that I should drop it no exceptions, but I am welcome to try Spring 07'. Back then, about a week ago, I checked the schedule and it said 2 waitlisted students. However, today I checked schedule.berkeley.edu again and it said the class was full, w/ no waitlisted students.

I haven't dropped the class yet, but I really really want to have this course! Should I just drop it now, and see if there is any room in the future? Should I even go to this class on the first day, even if it's full?

Thanks!!!!

Um, I think that you should drop it...no point in agitating the prof by going against his word. If anything, he can personally drop you from the course, which would translate into you not being welcome the next semester. I would suggest emailing the prof and explaining that there aren't any waitlisted students for the class anymore, and if you still need to drop it. If he maintains his "drop with no exception" mandate, then drop it.

if you didn't already know, courses in the 200's are graduate level courses...which would explain why the professor was talking about graduate students. in my opinion, i think that professor might not want undergraduate students in his course...and his email was his nice way of telling you that. so i would suggest dropping it. i don't know your journalism background, but enless you have a very good formal education in writing or whatever, that class might be over your head anyway.
