Not Sure What Schools to Apply To

I know that I want to go to school in New England or in one of the surrounding areas. So far the schools at the top of my list are:

Brandeis University
University of Rochester
Carnegie Mellon
Johns Hopkins
Ithaca College
Tufts University
New York University

I am currently a junior. I have a 3.7 GPA with all Honors and AP courses, have scored a 3 on the Euro AP Test and a 4 on the Stats AP test, and I am currently taking AP Bio and AP Lit. I play varsity soccer and run varsity track, am in the community service club, book club, and am co-president of the ski and snowboard club. I realize that my stats are not amazing or anything, and some of these schools may even be a reach for me, which is why I am so unsure of whether they are a good match for me to apply to.

I chose these groups of schools because they have strong soccer programs and I want to play D3 soccer, but more importantly because they are highly selective schools with an intellectual student body that will challenge me. I also believe that I want to go to a school with a wide variety of majors, as I am unsure of what I want to major in. Another main reason I like the above school is because I want to be near a city, but still have a good campus feel, and I believe most of these colleges can give me that. I realize that there are a few exceptions to all of these things I mentioned, but this is what I generally am looking for.

So are the schools I listed above a good match for me? Are these the type of schools that I should be applying to with my stats, or are they a bit of a reach for me? And do you have any other school suggestions that might fit me better? Thanks!

If you have a coach who can intercede for you at one of these schools, you’ll have large advantage. Why don’t you tell us what your standardized test score was and what merit or need-based aid your parents will need for you to be able to go to any one of these.

I have not taken SATs or ACTs yet, but my PSATs were a 1800 so I’m expecting to get somewhere around or hopefully a little higher than that. My parents make too much money for me to qualify for any financial aid, but they still do not want to spend 60k + for a school because they think it is outrageous, so I would need about a 10k merit based aid reward to attend some of the pricier schools on the list.

In that case, your SAT score means cash for you at merit awarding schools and you aren’t there. Prep for that. If you are in the recruiting pool that is a game changer, though.

as @BrownParent pointed out, we need to know if there’s good chance a coach is pursuing you because that could make all the difference at several of these schools.

It might also help if we had some idea what you wanted to major in.

Ask your parents how much they WILL pay each year.

Your likely SAT score won’t even be close for any possible merit at those schools. Merit scholarships are highly competitive at those schools (if they offer them), and that means that the eligible group has tippy top SAT/ACT scores and down-selection will come from that group.

You need to find out how much your parents will pay. Getting $10k+ merit at ANY school (if your SAT ends up being around a 1900-2000) would mean applying to much lower ranked schools.

Okay thank you! I am in the recruiting pool at at least 3 of these schools. Some of the others seem interested one minute and uninterested the next, so not completely sure how many of them are actively recruiting me.

I will definitely study more and shoot for higher SATs. My parents will pay a little over 45k, and I will be able to contribute about 5k a year in savings.

As for majors, I have more or less no clue what I want. I am interested in Business, but then I am also interested in Biology, and also in Computer Sciences. So I will most likely apply as undeclared.

The majors can tell us what kinds of schools to look for. Since you might want business, we have to find schools that have business, bio, and cs. Not a problem.
