Not sure which school would be best for me.

Hi all,

So I have been at community college for 4 years now. First year I had no idea what I was doing and just slacked off, second year I started going for a business degree, 3rd and 4th years I got serious and started prep for robotics engineering. Finally heard back from all the schools I applied to:

UCB: Denied (Electrical Engineering and Computer Science)
UCLA: Denied (Electrical Engineering)
UCSB: Accepted (Electrical Engineering)
UCSD: Accepted (Electrical Engineering)
UCI: Accepted (Electrical Engineering)
UCSC: Accepted (Robotics Engineering)
UCD: Accepted (Electrical Engineering)

Top pick was obviously Berkeley, but unfortunately I heard back from them today and did not get accepted.
I want to major in robotics engineering, Santa Cruz was the only school I found the degree at so I am highly considering them, but am a bit worried due to what I’ve heard about it being a party school. Otherwise if I were to go to any of the other schools I would have to transfer for electrical engineering and add on some computer science courses.

If you were accepted to these same schools, could you give me a few reasons why you might choose one over the other?

I think either UCSD or UCSC will be best for you

I’ll try to put your choice into a different context, one more relatable to kids not familiar with the UCs… but which might put it into perspective. I’ll use the Big Ten:

Michigan - Denied (Berkeley)
Wisconsin- Denied (UCLA)
Illlinois - Electrical (UCSD)
Purdue - Electrical (UCSB)
Ohio State - Electrical (UCI)
Minnesota - Electrical (UCD)
Rutgers - Robotics (UCSC)

Sure, Rutgers isn’t as prestigious as the other Big Ten schools listed, but it’s pretty decent, and it has your desired major. (and you’re in it)

I imagine there are parties at every UC, like there are at every big ten school. If you love robotics, and if you don’t think you’ll be able to study it at the other UCs, then I think you should study it at UCSC. If you could study it st the others, then that bears consideration, but academic fit is the most important area, imo. and ucsc still has the same second letter as the rest of them.

I’d go with UCSC. You’ll be 22, old enough to find your own fun without relying on freshman parties. It has your major and is well respected for it.

Thanks guys. I thought it over during the night and I am pretty much settled on UCSC.
Appreciate the input.

COngratulations!
