Not taking a class you said you intended to take

One of the classes i said i would take before i transferred has been all filled up and i am not able to get a seat in any of the classes. I called them and they said something about my admission was based on my gpa and fulfilling all the classes i had to take, but i feel that they didn't mention everything. Also on assist.org they mentioned i could take either Calc 1A and Calc 1B OR Math 12. I couldnt get into the Calc 1B, so would it be helpful to just take Math 12? Am i missing information that i would get my acceptance withdrawn if i dont take Calc 1B?

Hey Moseskang12,

The most important thing you’d want to do right now is to e-mail admissions with the update of your class changes. The reason for this is so that you obtain a return e-mail as to what you may need to do (ie. taking the course during the summer), if the class can be neglected for the time being and taken later at UCSB, or in the worst case your application is rescinded.

The point to this is that if an alternative does present itself or you get a green light you have it in writing and in an e-mail proper.

At the same time, calling admissions has often obtained mixed results for a variety of questions from students. These ladies and gentlemen get hundreds of calls a day with questions ranging from the most simplistic to complex and unintentionally they might just toss you a quick answer that probably is or isn’t the entire story.

What you need to have is your question answered and preferably in an e-mail.

The -what- here is the most important thing; if the class should be taken in the summer, at UCSB later or not at all. Do not settle for just a vague “something about… blah blah gpa blah” Get a definitive this is how it’s going to work now that your schedule has changed.

That way, if push comes to shove you can pull it out and say, “No, I followed your instructions to the letter and you said that etc etc then my admissions is alright.”

This is by no means the typical operational procedure but at least you’re tentatively covering yourself.

In the end, while they do often try to work with the students in the event of changes or the like (because they do understand it happens) be prepared to be faced with the worst.

Best of luck Moseskang12!

Good luck

R U from DA?
Anyways, if you r an Econ major, then it’s very important that you take either cal. 1A&1B or Math 12, they are the major requirements. I was very close to not be able to take Cal1A this quarter, the counselor in my school says that “They make exceptions for some but for others they don’t”… and she can’t even answer if UCSB will drop my admission because of that, even though I’ve already fulfilled Math 12!
I was lucky enough that I got into 1A this quarter. Goodie!
I will suggest you email the department directly, not just the Admissions, sometimes they have no idea wat they r talking about. Tell the Department that you are able to take Math 12, since that’s wat you need for the major. And hey! It wasn’t your fault that the class was too crowded! You shouldn’t be punished because the school had budget cut and can not hire more math professors… ╭(╯^╰)╮
