Hey CC, today I made the decision to drop from my honors Physics class to regular Physics. I did this on the basis that I've always had trouble with sciences (typically coming up with a B- in both honors Chemistry and honors biology) and the rest of my schedule is already littered with AP and honors classes. I also do not plan on taking the AP counterpart of this class senior year.

As of now, my planned senior schedule will look like this:

AP Calculus BC
AP Statistics
AP English Literature
AP Economics
Independent Studies in Language (will have completed the AP counterpart this year, hope to pursue studies in the language independently)

Will colleges be turned off by my not taking a science course senior year? I know many kids go on to take second year courses in these sciences, however science simply isn't my thing at all and it always has a negative impact on my GPA. I would much rather take two math courses which I enjoy rather than having to deal with the stress of dealing with science.

Your proposed senior year schedule with 2 AP math classes and no science is a bit unusual. While calculus is used in non-science disciplines (as for example Economics), it is often the math baselevel for science and engineering. So perhaps your rationale is to major in Economics or a similar discipline in college. If that’s made clear in your application your choice of courses would be easier to understand.

All this said I encourage you to rethink your senior year. While your senior year schedule has 4 AP courses it somehow doesn’t seem balanced. Your independent study class would need to stand out in some major way. Perhaps you can work that out with your language department; otherwise it may appear like an “easy” course taken for the sake of an “A”.

I took no science courses whatsoever my senior year (it also wasn’t my thing) and it didn’t affect me adversely. However, I did take 5 AP classes, so I don’t think colleges would have thought I was slacking off in any way. My GPA actually went up senior year, as a combination of better choice over classes and more APs.

I’m taking both AP calc and stats because i’m interested in math. I think senior year, you should take the ap courses that you are interested in and will more prepare for your intended college major. Mine is going to business adminstration. If your major is going to be a humanity or literature major, then forget the science class. What colleges are you applying to?

Thanks for the responses guys, I really appreciate it.

@fogcity: Are you saying that my schedule would be unbalanced because of the independent studies course? Or simply as a whole? The only way I can make my schedule seem more rigorous or “balanced” would be to take an AP science, which I obviously have no intention of doing whatsoever.
