Not the greatest student, but instate colleges..chances please!

Okay, so here’s the deal:

For middle school I went to a small magnet school for the arts where I was a theatre major. My class had about 140 kids, and you had to audition to get into the school.

For high school, I decided I didn’t want a career in the arts, so I transferred to my home public high school. The whole entire student body there was about 3,000. I hated it. I went there for all of 9th grade, and quarters 1 through 3 of 10th grade. I did terrible grade wise, and could never get involved in extra cirriculars because it was so competitive.

So then, last quarter of 10th grade, I transfeered to a private Baptist high school, my whole class consists of 9 people, including me. I was finally able to get involved and pull some good grades. We don’t have honors, college prep, etc.

So here’s what I’ve got so far:

GPA: Right now, overall I think it’s a 2.8 (maybe)
Rank: Unsure
SAT: Haven’t taken it quite yet.

8th Grade:
French I 82%

9th Grade:
(I’m kind of doing this from memory)
Freshmen Focus (required) 96%
Health and Wellness (required) 75%
Algebra 1 CP-B 82%
French II CP-B 70%
English I CP-B 82%
Global Studies I CP-B 77%
Physical Science CP-B 75%/78%
PE I 78%

10th Grade:
(Quarters 1-4, Public and Private School (final averages))
Journalism I 85%
Law Education CP-B 93%
English II CP-B 74%
Global Studies II CP-B 77% (Don’t really remember this one)
Spanish I CP-B (Quarter 3=60%) I had to drop it because I switched schools and we were on block scheduling and I couldn’t take it at the new school.
Computer/Keyboarding 92%
Biology I CP-B 75/78%
Geometry I CP-B 83%

So, I ended up doing much, much, much better at the private school and I had close to a 4.0 GPA from 4th quarter. I’m shooting for one junior year!! Unfortuneatly, my grades from quarters 1-3 were terrible and had to be salvaged by the good grades at the new school.

Extra Cirricular’s:
-Varsity Cheerleading
11th grade-Captain
12th grade-(hoping for captain again)
-Varsity Volleyball ((11, 12)
-Competitive Figure Skater (3 years)
-Drama Club (11,12) (Founder)
-Varsity Softball (11,12)

Volunteer Work:
Going to hop on that this year!! =]

SAT Prep: I’m going to be taking that as well so I can make sure I get some good SAT scores or ACT scores.

Colleges:
I’m an instate resident of South Carolina

Winthrop (Interior Design mostly)
Wofford
Newberry
Erskine
USC Beaufort
College of Charleston
Savannah College of Art and Design (Interior Design)
Anderson College (Interior Design)
Costal Carolina
Charleston Southern University
-I am planning on majoring in either Business or Interior Design, possibly both!-

Alright, so I just want to know my chances, and what to do to help my chances at these schools. THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!!!

Anyone wanna help here?? No one ever responds...so it would be nice. Bump.

anyone forreal?? cmon.

I know this isn't helping much, but I honestly don't know much about those schools. I'd say go to the sites of the schools, look at their stats, and then categorize in them in a safety, match, and reach list. If you don't have any safeties, make a safety. See what you need to imrpove to get into your toughest school. Make sure your grades have an uphill curve...that's one of the most important aspects of college admissions. Maybe write an essay explaining your situation...but don't make it sound too whiny. Writing about something that maybe you don't like to look back on or are ashamed of uniquely shows honesty and courage.

bump. please, any help.

im not alot of help..but..i remember my teach telling me that. if u wanna major in "interior designer" u have to take physics.but..i may be wrong.so.sneh.... but good luck :D

I think if you stay on your current path you can get into schools like Anderson, Newberry, Beaufort, Costal Carolina, and Charleston Southern. None have real difficult admissions.

However, the rest will probably want a 3.0 out of you. I calculated your GPA to be ~2.6, so a good junior year will likely land you in your other schools. Savannah doesn't really have admissions statistics listed. If you want a good chance at these schools, get a 3.4 junior year, having a 3.0 and rising grades is an admit at most of these schools, especially having an in-state applicant.

^

Agree with above. Haven't heard much of any of these schools, but they don't seem too terribly selective from browsing on princetonreview.com, which I suggest you do to see avg. GPA and SAT scores of incoming freshmen. Also most schools will have this kind of information in their brochures, so be sure to go around and visit the campuses to pick up some reading or mail for additional information. Do not get too discouraged if the avg. GPA is a little higher than yours. You have a very, very unique situation. On most apps there is a section to write about anything relevent to your admissions not in the essay. I would seriously consider using that or your essay to explain your unique background at an arts school, your difficult transition, but afterwards steeply rising grades, and what this unique perspective can bring to said school.

Good luck. You're an average student w/ a unique background. I think you will have a good shot at all of these schools and a great time there. I have a friend looking into Savannah College of Art and Design. Good stuff.

One thing to keep in mind is many of these arts schools will not be focused on grades at all, and will want a portfolio. Do you do a lot of art in your spare time? Do you have a portfolio? If not, you might want to talk with an art teacher at your school about putting one together.

Also talk to your guidance counseler about what other options you have and what schools will be a good fit for you. They know these kinda things.

bump bump anyone else?? thanks everyone so far.
