Notification date of Finalist of Richmond Scholars

Thank you kelliebm--

I understand and appreciate your message. I didn't feel accused--but I feel like my job requires me to live with one foot inside the institution, understanding the place and interpreting it to the outside world. The other foot is outside, and I try mightily to interpret it back to the people inside who are completely inside and unaware of how this process (for you) is intertwined with other institutions, the pressure of the senior year, the changing relationships within your families as you prepare to move off, the financial stress of paying for higher education and so many other things. So the hard part of that is that I am neither fully inside or outside and so I'm a little foreign to both. (Existential dillemmas from admission people--yikes--it's not as easy as it may look!)

I have enjoyed being a part of this forum to try to help you all understand what's happening in here to the extent that such a thing is possible. There are so many factors pushing and pulling these decisions this way and that. Thanks for affirming that it has been more helpful than harmful in your search.

I did not go to my first choice college. I was wait listed there. I went to my 3rd choice, because it offered me way more financial aid than choice #2 did. I had not investigated any of my choices nearly to the degree that I think most of you will have done--the information just wasn't out there in the same way back then. But I do think too much information can really bog you down. Remember that your success in college has much more to do with YOU then it does with the school you attend. In that spirit, all this can matter just a little bit less. Any one who applies to a place like this is highly talented--you guys have what it takes to make the most of any environment in which you may land next fall. Just embrace it and make the most!

TGIF. I need a weekend pretty badly and I bet all of you do too!

Presidential Scholarships are valued at $15,000 per academic year for four-years of undergraduate study. We're in the process of determining who will receive those awards right now, so stay tuned.

Hi. I applied as Richmond semi-finalist and never received an email as either being a finalist or not. Have the rejections not been sent out yet?

I spoke to one person in admissions and another who supposedly is sending out the scholarship emails; both claimed that all the finalists had not been notified yet and that they were still reviewing some of the applications. There seems to be some misinformation going out here?

False hope. There's nothing quite like it. :)

With deepest apologies, Tim. I was unaware that the faculty chair of the Richmond Scholar committee came in today with a couple more finalists and asked that they be invited. I was in meetings all day--we do have the rest of the class to admit still. I honestly believed it was all said and done.

The semi-finalists who were not invited as finalists should find e-mails in their mailboxes very shortly.

I just received the rejection letter for the scholars program (I was a semi-finalist). It really is unfortunate that Richmond is so expensive otherwise, I was really leaning towards it as my top choice and now I essentially have to cross it off my list because of the price. I know many of you are in the same situation.

I do have a question though. I’ve read that presidential scholarships are offered to students from the semifinalist pool…is the rejection from the Richmond Scholar’s Program also a stock rejection for the Presidential scholarship? The email I received said “how disappointed we are that we are not able to offer you a merit award in recognition of your excellent record.” Does this mean just the Richmond Scholar’s merit award specifically, or all merit awards in general? I hope UR Admissions can give me the answer!

UR Admissions, thanks so much for keeping us informed. I think you've done an incredible job.

Got my rejection email today. On the bright side, at least I know I've been accepted! There's still hope for next year.

I'm glad to have found this site. My daughter has been accepted to UR and is awarded need-based aid but not the Richmond Scholar. UR was not her first choice initially but her odds of attending UR now seem to be increasing. In hind sight, I was feeling guilty that we did not specifically aim for the Richmond scholar award by tweaking her essays/resume to meet the criteria. I also feel our daughter is a terrific candidate for this award. We are international, and I know that the daughter of a local school counselor received this award a couple of years ago. (- this mother must know what UR is looking for and perhaps understands the selection process enough to "tweak" their application.)

The UR response in this thread was helpful to understand that my daughter's chances for UR merit award is now very slim. She is a US citizen living abroad. My concern is that if she chooses UR, her need-based aid may be reduced significantly next year as her brother will no longer be an undergraduate. Are there any merit-based opportunities for 2nd year students?

Thank you so much for your responses, UR admissions. Is your participation on this forum voluntary or a standard procedure?

will Richmond Scholar finalists be notified by email or regular mail or both??

thanks!

Richmond Scholar finalists were notified by both e-mail and mail. Richmond Scholar RECIPIENTS will be notified by mail (internationals by e-mail) and they should hear sometime next week. Thanks for your patience.

UR Admissions

I'm wondering how much weight the SAT score is in determining the Richmond scholars.

Also, are there merit scholarship opportunities for UR sophomores who did not receive as freshmen?

yeah, i meant recipients. i don't know why i wrote finalists.
thanks so much.

I just wanted to be clear I was telling you what you wanted to know. Not a big deal!

Hi! I am an international student and semi-finalist... From reading this thread it seems like if I did not receive any e-mails at this time, I am not advancing to the finalist stage (to my BIGGEST regret... )

Unfortunatelly, I need a substantial schollarship to be able to attend a school in US and Richmond gave me that hope. Now, the situation is pretty bad - a couple of other universities said that they will not even consider my application because I need so much money... How sweet of them. And that is considering that I have done EVERYTHING possible to make myself competative - high SAT's, AP's, high GPA, extra curriculars, volunteering, strong essays - you name it.

Anyway, UR Admissions - thanks for keeping us updated! Also, a quick question - does being a semi-finalist at least means an acceptance to Richmond? Something to brighten the gloom until April :)

Semifinalists were notified - finalists not yet

So have all semi-finalists been notified then?

yes, all semi-finalists have now been notified. i'm sorry for those who are disappointed. i congratulate those who were selected.

Helen-mes--

We have not yet notified FINALISTS--only semi-finalists have yet been identified. So you are not out of the running. Finalists will hear from us in several weeks.

UR Admissions - thanks so much! I guess I have been reading old posts and got confused...
Thanks again, I feel so much better now :)
Is it too early to have an exact date for the finalists?
