according to Scott Verzl's blog on the Admissions website, 41 McNair letters were signed yesterday (Friday) and sent by FedEx.He says they might arrive today,Saturday. You can read the entry at uscbloggers.com/scott
Good luck to everyone waiting to hear!!!!!
He also says Carolina Scholar notification is not far behind.

They only invited 41? Interesting. I thought it'd be 50...

Steeler,
No, its always the same number. They award 40 (or 41 if everyone ultimately enrolls)Remember, everyone invited is a winner. If you enroll, you either are a Finalist or a McNair Scholar..both have monetary rewards. The interview weekend just determines how much you win.Thats part of what makes it such a great weekend, everyone invited is already a winner they are not starting from scratch like at some other scholarship interview weekends.

I hope "not far behind" means in the next couple of days!

Well, for Carolina, I think they invite 50 and name 25 Scholars. You're right, getting invited is a huge scholarship, so even as a Finalist you're good. I could understand 50 (25 scholars), and 40 (is it half get scholars?), but 41 seems like an uneven number to pick.

I heard that the reason there are more Carolina scholars finalists is that ultimately less carolina finalists/scholars end up at USC...for the last few years it seems that there have only been about 25(total finalists/scholars) that enroll. The McNair/scholars/finalists seem to have a higher yield percentage....I think roughly >25 of the 40/41 ultimately enroll.

I may be wrong, but I think I remember learning the McNair program is funded for 40 per year. S's year, they chose 40 invitees, one dropped out the week before the weekend and the lovely people in charge invited S at the last moment instead of just letting 39 attend. He was lucky #41 and has been nicknamed "lucky" for 2 years now.Maybe they now invite 41 as a precaution?
I'm not quite sure what the number of scholars vs finalists winds up being and the yield number seems to vary each year.

This year there are 25 McNair scholars/finalists. As people who were designated as scholars turned it down, they "upgraded" finalists who had already accepted, so the split is something like 19 scholars and 6 finalists.

I'm a Carolina Scholars Finalist!! :)

FANTASTIC !!!
Congrats and enjoy your weekend!

anyone get anything from McNair yet? I'm assuming I didn't get it but then again I haven't heard of anyone else getting it either.

by the way, congrats scarolina89!

S has not received anything re: McNair. I assume he did not make the cut. He had pretty solid stats: over 4.0; SAT 1420/2180; SAT 2 eng 760, bio 720, ushist 740; 13 honors and aps; Commended national merit; AP Scholar with honor; 2 sport 4yr varsity athlete; lots of leadership and over 200 hrs community service working with mentally challenged kids. We are going to come down and visit later this month but the school (particularily the honors program) will really have to wow him now. Since he is does not appear to be a McNair finalist, he has kind of lost interest in SC because he has been admitted to some top schools, some with scholarships. I guess the competition for the McNair was very tough this year. I am trying to get him to keep an open mind about SC until we visit.

congrats to scarolina89, you should be very proud of yourself. You are a part of a very select group. Best of luck to you. Enjoy the weekend, your hard work paid off!

Yeah your son's stats are very similar to mine. I feel the same way about South Carolina now as I have lots of good options. I do not think we are out of the running though. Between here and the facebook group, no one has said anything about McNair so its possible they didn't mail them until Tuesday or so. Oh well, whatever happens happens.

Congrats, scarolina89. I might be part of the interviews, it'll be fun to see the finalists come.

don't forget that not being picked for the McNair or Carolina Scholars finals doesn't preclude a student from being awarded a different scholarship. Those letters will arrive shortly. Its quite a daunting number who actually filled out that Honors application. It shows how the reputation of the Honors Program, the University as a whole and the perception of the economic value of the scholarships has grown.

I second what cathymee has said. With any name scholarship and the in-state tuition remission USC is a very hard deal to pass up. Add to that the rapidly rising reputation the school is garnering and it is now one of today's real sleeper schools.

Departmental scholarships (which can be very substantial ) are often held until a student accepts the offer of admission. In these cases they want to reward the students who have already seen the value (and also are usually getting a nice benefit already) rather than using it as an additional lore.
