congrats. [inserted because "congrats." is 9 characters, and message must be at least 10]

My son got the big envelope and is sooooo excited. His Caltech admissions came today, too, and he had already been accepted by MIT. His best friend at high school received an Olin rejection today, though we can't imagine why.

tomboy, I don't know why private messages wouldn't be working, since I have them enabled, but anyway, my email is sarah dot oliver at students dot olin dot edu.

olinsaam - sent you a pm, some how they are working now. odd

I just came back to announce that I am still sad and broken-hearted about my rejection

where else are you looking at, kierke? i'm sorry about olin - so many really great kids were rejected, including my son's best friend, with amazing stats, grades, ecs, university classes, etc. 75 kids just isn't that many.

onlyamom- congrats to your s! Sounds like he had some amazing acceptances. Has he decided where he'll be going? Still, it must be bittersweet for him since his best friend was rejected from Olin.

Thanks, Kissy. It's true, my s is really sad his friend wasn't admitted - they were both so excited about Olin and going there together. Until my s learned about Olin, it had always been his dream to go to MIT, but he absolutely loved Olin when he visited and feels it's really "him," so he plans to go there. Last night we talked to parents of a student who turned down Princeton to go to Olin last year and LOVES it. It sounds like there's a lot of that. I take it your daughter is thrilled to be a student there? Did she have to make some difficult choices? My s's getting a lot of "you should go to MIT" from people who don't know Olin.

My D knew the first time she set foot on campus that it was the school for her. She also heard lots of unsolicited "advice" from others but never waivered in her decision. She LOVES it there. You get used to "explaining" Olin to people who ask (Owen?????) but I'm amazed at how eager the business community is to embrace these kids. I'm glad to hear your S has decided on Olin. Will his friend be going to MIT?

Kissy, my son's friend didn't apply to MIT, but he's waiting to hear from Princeton. He's been accepted by UCLA. Where else did your daughter apply?

Today I got the collective "WHAT!?!?!" When I told friends I was turning down MIT for Olin or Rice. Olin has me wait listed / deffered year option. and Ive not heard from Rice. So things are still playing out. People dont get how amazing Olin is until they visit. My mother still needs to see it, and I cant wait for her to do so. We're heading up next week.

Aah yes the collective "what?"

I recall this time when my daughter was accepted. I think Olin folks develop their own 60 second summary of Olin to respond to questions.

onlyamom- sent you a pm

it's nice to see there's a thread for Olin...

i got accepted but i can't decide if i should go. i loved the people i met at the candidate weekend and i feel it's a place i could really learn something. my parents would rather have me go to a well-established school (ie berkeley, uc san diego, duke, cornell, etc.). i'm leaning towards doing chem or bio engineering as of now. when i visited olin, i didn't get the impression that those subjects were developed as much as the other types of engineering. what should i do?

lofa- here's a link to the Olin student forum. You could probably get a lot of information from the students online. Good luck!

Lofa - Olin just felt right to my son, too. He loved the people there and the philosophy and the teachers. A lot of parents want their kids to have the safety of prestige, but my son is convinced that Olin will someday elicit envious, "You got to go to OLIN!!!" He's turning down MIT, Caltech, Princeton, UC Berkeley, etc. because Olin feels perfect. Whether or not it's the right school if you're going into chem or bio engineering is another question: you should call the school to find out what classes they will have to help you do that. They're really receptive to answering questions. Good luck!

Do call Olin about chem and bio engineering. I visited there on Thurs. afternoon and one of the prospective applicants asked about chem engineering. She was told that while Olin is considering expanding in this area, they do not currently have the appropriate labs and faculty to offer that as a concentration. If you get some information on those other engineering specialties, why not start a new thread here to discuss?

Wait... mootmom.. I think I know your kid. I was there thursday too. ( I spent wed night and thursday day there) And then you went to MIT for CPW?
and I met the kid, who we talked a lot at CPW about Olin and how we were both going....

tomboy, did you end up getting off the waitlist and into Olin?

yeah, I did. got in April 27th. Ive got a roommate, advisor, and SIBB already too. Im ready for the move from texas to Mass.
