So I have three people listed as my references on my resume, and I'm currently applying for a summer job for 2012.

I have previously (this past spring) asked them to be my references for my job hunt during summer 2011, so I'm wondering whether I should send them another email right now notifying them that I'll be using them again for next year. Would this be too annoying for them or is this the right thing to do?

So if I'm supposed to give them a "heads-up" email that some companies might call them, can someone please help me to draft a template email regarding this?

Generally, you shouldnt put references on your resume.

If you’ve already asked them, then you don’t need to ask them again. However, if you think they may have forgotton who you are, then you should find new references.

I’d let them know that they may be called, especially if it’s been some time since asking them. Don’t want them to be caught off guard if they get called.

DEFINITELY ask them again. It’s absolutely the most polite thing to do, especially if you last asked and mentioned you were applying for jobs for summer 2011. Why would they expect to still be on your list? For all they know, you’ve had three jobs since then, and have brand new references. At the very least, it’s a little reminder - and nobody will mind that. Like NBrink says, you don’t want them to be caught off guard if they get called. That won’t end well for you.

Just write an e-mail explaining that you’re looking for jobs for another summer and would they mind if you continued to use them as a reference?
