I’m applying RD. I wanted to EA, but I was a little worried about the SAT threshold they use for EA applicants. Now I’m kicking myself though, because my score is above the minimum!!

What’s the minimum SAT score?

1440/1600, according to the CT admissions counselor as of the middle of november

alright nice so if you have the minimum does it help a lot? Do they not really look at those below it? Or what exactly does the minimum mean?

Thanks for posting…fingers crossed - 1480 here. Hoping to be deferred as worst case scenario…don’t think I can handle a rejection so soon!

What is the SAT threshold thing? I didnt know that they had one. I can’t believe they would reject people over one part of the application… I thought it was a holistic approach.

my 1490 is barely over…depressing

I would not worry too much about thresholds reported here. ND is very good at holistic review, so one part of an otherwise excellent application might result in deferral, but probably not outright denial. A borderline SAT/ACT can still be improved for RD as can a GPA with first semester grades. ND is also quite firm about a “no minimum” policy. Of course, there will be averages and ranges calculated after the fact but not set in advance. That would be unrealistic as they would have no idea what stats the candidate pool will be presenting. Just keep working hard so you can send new, improved scores and GPA in case you are deferred.

oh…deferrals are sad too b/c i can’t improve my application in any way.

my gpa will only go up from a 3.95–>3.96 if i get straight A’s again and i’m not retaking the SAT b/c i’m jus like sick of tests. :(

i’ll just hope for the best then.

ND admissions counselors use the SAT threshold (not sure what it is for ACT…probably around a 32?) to figure out which students to take a quick look at, and which students to look into more deeply. If you have over a 1440, they will look more deeply at your application to decide whether or not you will be admitted. If you have below a 1440, you will most likely be deferred or denied. After dealing with the 1440+ applicants, they will move to the 1440 and below and try to figure out quickly who will be deferred and who will be denied. However, that’s not to say that every single student with below a 1440 will be deferred or denied–if there’s something really really special in your application that stand out, you could still be admitted. And just because you DO have over a 1440 doesn’t mean that you won’t be denied, either.
Also–don’t worry about your score being “just over” the 1440 threshold. As long as you’re over, they’ll seriously consider your application.

The SAT threshold is not very well-known. My dad does a lot of work for his alumni club that has to do with speaking with ND admissions counselors, so that’s how we found out that they use an SAT minimum for early action.

Yes, ND uses a holistic approach to applications, but much more so with RD and EA. Also, the SAT threshold is only set each year after all of the EA applications have been submitted, so it is not set blindly in advance.
And you are right that there is no minimum SAT or ACT score, but this threshold does make a huge difference in the EARLY ACTION pool.

I don’t buy those “thresholds” Neighbor’s Daughters both applied EA, one in 2009 the other last year. Last year, got in with a 31 ACT and in 2009 was denied with a 34 (later accepted to NU). Same background, same curriculum, same H.S. It’s a crap shoot.

if i get denied EA, can i reapply through RD?

No, only if you get deferred during EA will you be considered for RD.

I just applied RD a few days ago to ND and I applied early to Villanova and Fordham. I have a 4.9 and I’m number 2 in my class of 600. I am president of three clubs, have done three sports a year all four years, and I’m a legacy. I’m not a great test taker though, and I did not do well in my ACT/SAT. Well, I did very well for every school I’m applying to but Notre Dame. Do you think the ACT/SAT will be a determining factor, though? Any thoughts? I’m kind of freaking out!

low GPA, but 35 + huge legacy… hoping, almost desperately, for RD and some $!

So, is everyone waiting on the EA decision? or are there other schools in the hopper? D already accepted to U of St. Thomas (St. Paul, MN), Drake, and Wisconsin - Madison; waiting on EA from ND and UMich.

To all those with lower SATs, don’t fret too much. I got in EA last year with a 2150 (I also had a 34 ACT) BUT my school (without my permission) sent my AP scores so ND got to see my 2 on the chem exam and they still let me in. I know this is one of the longest waits of your lives so do yourselves a favor and keep busy! Good luck to you all!

princeton girl…do higher SAT scores relate to better chance? like a 2300 give me a much better chance than say a 2150, or is the difference negligible once you are above a certain level?

Do you think they’ll reject me EA with a 1390? (2150 with all three, but they won’t count my 760 writing. Kind of failed with a 600 in math, but crossing my fingers that my 790 CR will mitigate that a bit.)

@Mishi543 I don’t know if they’ll flat out reject you. You might get deferred. A 1390 really isn’t too bad. But if you’re essays, recs, ECs were good, maybe you could get in. It’s really a random-ish process. Good luck! :)
