Interesting story in today’s ND student newspaper about the role of legacy in admissions.
We are trying to prioritize essays and deadlines ! Do we need to apply by November 1st (Early Action) to be considered for any of the (limited) merit scholarships at ND. Are there any merit scholarships that require an application by November 1st. My son decided today that he will not REA at ND so the application deadline is not until the Jan date
My son took the SAT Dec of his Junior year and didn’t do great. He took the ACT in Jan of his junior year and decided it was a better test for him.
He focused on the ACT and retook it 3 more times and ended with a 33 super score.
The problem is we submitted his SAT scores to Notre Dame before he had even taken the ACT.
so both his ACT and SAT scores show up in his EA Application
does Notre Dame only consider the higher of the scores (ACT vs SAT)?
he has sent an email to his admission counselor explaining that he only wants his ACT score considered in admissions and that he took the SAT early on in the process before deciding to focus on the SAT.
Did you ever hear back? D24 just got the link to her portal and was surprised to see the SAT took at the beginning of junior year (actually a week before PSAT as a warm up for it) that they have because she sent it with her application to the Leadership Seminar (it was in range for the seminar but not school admissions and she was not accepted for the seminar). She took the ACT at the end of junior year and got a 35 in one sitting and sent that with her admissions application and was expecting that to be the only one. If we choose to cancel her score it will cancel both. Was going to email her admissions counselor as well but figure as soon as I call attention to it he’s seen it anyway and can’t ‘unsee’ it.
here is what we got back;
“We will review your highest scores only in the application process. This means that we will not weigh your lower score into the decision. We will look at the highest score and note that in the application. “
I guess what we are hoping for is that they have so many applications to go through that they just look for the highest test score and put that on a score sheet of some sort somewhere… it’s still unnerving though and I wish that we could just have the SAT score removed
ND “SuperScores” SAT/ACT. It is clearly listed on the Admission criteria and also listed on the individual applicant’s portal.
Amazing visit to ND Nov 2-3. Admissions and campus tour had lunch in South Dining Hall, and 2 Engineering Dept. Meetings. Now the nervous wait, but cautiously optimistic for the Dec 15 1842pm Eastern Time REA Release.
Not great GPA 3.7 US, but not bad SAT 1530. Hope to get in.
I’m wondering if my mind is playing tricks on me or if anyone else noticed this. When I applied in September, everyone I spoke to told me that ND is more like “test recommended” because they do lean heavily on the scores. I checked the Common Data Set and sure enough, the # of enrolled students who submitted SAT/ACT was very close to 100% for 2022-2023, similar to the previous year. I just checked the same document and now it’s closer to 70%, indicating they’re more open to test-optional applicants. Did anyone else notice that?
Our ND Recruiter told us specifically to SUBMIT Test Scores if applying REA.
Its quite natural that most students applying to a T20 like ND are test takers with high scores and would submit their scores.
My opinion on the matter was to submit them if they were in range, I felt like applying without would be hiding something. So I did, but… apparently 30% of their enrollees didn’t last year. Which shocked me when compared with the year before, when almost everyone did. The year prior, I understand people having access issues due to COVID, and yet most people submitted scores. It’s just interesting…
With respect to admitted (not enrolled) students, ND reported these stats on its website:
Class of 2026: 33% of admitted students did not submit test scores
Class of 2027: 37% of admitted students did not submit test scores
“Thirty-seven percent of the students admitted to the Class of 2027 did not submit a test score with their application, an increase of four percent from the prior year.”
Two of my kiddos attend(ed)('23, '27). One applied REA, the other applied RD. Both submitted test scores. Neither are recruited athletes. Hope that is helpful.
The part that isn’t disclosed is how many of the non-submitters are athletes.
I saw that. But if you look at the CDS for those years, 2027 seems right (of enrolled students, 36% SAT, 31% ACT). I understand some people might submit both, which could bring it close to 37% not submitting. But 2026 seems off (of enrolled students, 48% submitted SAT and 52% submitted ACT) . . . how does that translate to 33% of enrolled students not submitting scores?
The most recently-published CDS for ND (and most schools I believe) is labelled “2022-2023” and reflects data for the students who enrolled in the fall of 2022 (current sophomores, graduating class of 2026). The data for my child’s class (current freshmen, enrolled fall 2023, graduating class of 2027) has not yet been published.
The info I posted was from the admissions website and relates to the graduating classes of '26 and '27. The two most recent CDS reports reflect info for the graduating classes of '25 and '26. I’m not sure if that answers your question.
This may help too…a link to a 2022 interview with the then VP of Enrollment and a quote about the test optional results for Classes of 2025 and 2026:
"While the standardized test has become less important in admissions decisions, Bishop expressed some concerns about the sustainability of the university’s new test-optional policy for applications.
“Prior to Covid, about 10 percent of an applicant pool at a test optional selective university were opting for the no test alternative. Right now, at many schools this is about 50 percent,” he said. In this year’s class of 2026, similarly to the admitted class of 2025, 33 percent of admitted students did not submit a test score to the university.
Bishop said that many students withhold their test scores from the university if it falls below the median from previous years. “If the trends we saw this year and last year persist, and if the students applying to the most selective colleges seem to withhold their test scores if their scores are below the median score for enrolled students, then it is likely that many of the most selective colleges will elect to return to requiring the test,” he predicted."
Oh, yes, didn’t even realize I was comparing different years and that CDS was that far behind! Thank you for entertaining my weird ramblings!
