Hey guys! I am currently a high school senior and am very interested in medicine. I recently heard about NSU dual admission program for Osteopathic Medicine and started to research about it. Throughout the undergrad years the requirements are 3.4 GPA and a 502 on the MCAT. I have met all criteria for applying to both 3+4 year program and 4+4 year program of 30 composite ACT and 27 composite ACT respectively with a 3.5 weighted high school GPA. I got a 31 on the ACT and my superscore is a 33. My weighted GPA is 4.214.
If you know a lot about this program or are in this program please help me out with the following questions!
Do I have a good chance of getting into this program?
Is this a good program to try for? meaning if it is a good program that prepares you for the future?
If I meet the requirements in undergrad I am automatically accepted into the DO school without another application?
Are there other BS/DO programs easier to get into? Or are better overall?
How is the interview process? If you got an interview is it likely for you to get in?
My parents really want me to get into a BS/DO program but I am such a nervous person and am always nervous for interviews and looking for some helpful insight! Thank you so much!!
I don’t know a lot about the program, but gather that it has a good reputation among osteopathic programs. According to us news, all the graduates of the program successfully placed into residencies.
While your ACT satisfied their requirement, that itself may not guarantee an interview. You may still have enough time to give it another shot and raise it by a point or more? (I think they don’t super score and their application deadline is farther than most programs). Your GPA definitely helps though. You haven’t mentioned about your extra curriculars though, which will also play a role in both interview and admissions. Not long ago another student planning on applying there posted her profile on the forum, if you want to cross check.
I came to know about the program when one of my D’s class mates, child of a pediatrician, chose to join the program in the 2017 cycle. And yes it seems to be a guaranteed program as long as you satisfy the requirements (unlike lecom). One thing you and your family will have to consider is the financial aspect during med school. It is quite expensive, on par or may be even more so than the MD programs.
For interviews, practice some mock interviews with friends and elders, it seems there are some such samples on you tube and elsewhere, so search for them. Also read the post below for some tips overall.
Thank you so much for the info!! I was wondering since your D’s class mate got into the program, you could describe her credentials and what she did to get in? @rk2017
Unfortunately no, the kids aren’t in touch with each other for almost a couple of years. But I am sure she did some physician shadowing and had decent grades and scores. Besides that, the course rigor of their high school. They both were class mates in honors physics in freshman year and AP Psych in senior year and perhaps in honors anatomy and physiology too in senior year. Also her parent being a pediatrician might have helped at varying stages. Another class mate joined NYIT 's program.
Regarding shadowing not sure whether she did with an MD or DO practitioner. The DO programs may want to know your motivation for choosing the osteopathic route and may question in the interviews in that direction, explicitly or implicitly. So be prepared to do enough homework in that respect, whether or not you have had any osteopathic shadowing.
