November 2009 CRITICAL READING Discussion

Was the answer to the question asking which was closest to the cards being dealt out, “monkey riding on a tiger?”

ohh hahaha i think subjective was a answer to another question and i agree with biologist.
do you remember puttind down benevolence or benevolent? how bout exuberant?

The question was like which one accurately depicts “two hats” i put oceanographer because he was playing two fields as well but idk… What were the other choices for the naive question because naive was too harsh

For the fuel cells passage

was there an answer talking about how a part of the passage would justify the same thing for drilling in Alaska?

yeah naive wasnt it i think it was the second answer choice but i dont remember

I think the harshness was apt, especially as Tsugumi explicitly says to Maria: “You’re such a little girl!”

i remember marking it down between something and insincereity and i choose the other one bc insincereity didnt make sense since she was honestly expressing her feelings

@JDong
I put that I think (if that was the one where it was the different quotes from Passage 1, then I did) because the cards being dealt out was pretty much that your life is all determined and you can’t really change it. The monkey was riding the tiger and was trying to be in control of his own life, but the tiger was a symbol for predetermination or something, so the monkey’s efforts were pointless. At least that’s what I got out of the passage.

i dont consider her “overly” naive cause she was able to see through tsugumi and notice her vuneralbility

It’s not what you consider her, it’s how Tsugumi characterizes her – big difference.

did “two hats” refer to science and politics or science and a different field, if it was the first, i missed that question lol

For the monkey riding the tiger one i put something about a chain. Because the sentence following the chain said something about predetermined actions. I also conisdered the monkey and tiger one, but maybe i got it wrong.

I’m fairly sure it was the first; that was the subject of both passages (involvement of scientists in politics).

Yes, I don’t think the oceanographer represented “two hats” because it is expected for a man in his field to be exploring the ocean floor or whatever it said.

For the short passage on walking, passage 2’s tone was “contrary” right?

did anyone get the one about the mom loving the english language?

i didn’t get the 2 q’s about why she liked certain words “tabernacle, parable, covenant, etc.”
was it something about sensory ?

and also, when she said she was an “unconventional mom”, was it unorthodox?

did anyone have the passage about the indian woman in america? seeing another indian lady in a bookstore and hearing her accent??

for tabernacle, i said sensory - she described those words as if she was rolling marbles in her mouth, describing a pleasurable sensory experience

yes cokmbine

dolewhip, do you remember anything else about the questions with the language and mother?

someone said the answers were “perceptions…” and “childiish language…” do you remember any?

can someone elaborate on the Two hats question? That one was so hard… I think I picked the improve chimpanzee habitat answer
