November 2009 SAT Test Discussion

I put twelve.
Here’s a pic of the solution as I remember it:

http://i903.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/albums/ac232/Joshtch/Dogmathquestion.jpg

@ashley118

I’m pretty the question was actually
-4abs(2x+k)=-2abs(-2k-mx)

what i did was I divided both sides my -2 leaving me with 2abs(2x+k)=abs(-2k-mx)
m=4 so the left side will match the right side. regardless of the negatives and positives, it will still be the same answer since absolute values make the answer positive.

does that make sense?

do u guys remember for the writing section with the smiles/expressions passage, in the sentence error part there was a question that had one portion of the sentence that said “when one learns” underlined…

I said the sentence had no error but I was thinking about circling the part that said “one learns”.

What did you guys put?

here’s some stuff i wasnt sure about
(BLUE BOOK COVER)

for section 4 writing (i had experimental section 7 writing)
i remember i got 3 Es on sentence completion

 1. the biologists saw a jaguar, which indicates that they weren’t extinct
 2. The people at the clown college, which closed its doors some time ago
 3. the practice of freezing foods is not a recent invention; it was praticed by the eskimo long ago

A random one of the find the correct choice thing:
4.The revenues of this small outlet will exceed somethingB** the revenue of either of the large outlets in the past 10 years

and section 10 writing i had

 1. Beethoven made not only symphonies, but in a large part after he had died, etc. i said A
 2. the person’s characters, all of them women, experienced many things: I said A

math was really easy
the one with the circle in a square on a 30-60-90 triangle, was the answer 5, and was the circle’s area 25pi or square’s area 25 pi?

English the articles that counted were:
section (2)
2 short passage, one on a guy’s dad whose a collector of spare parts, etc.

1 passage on forged art

double passage on conservation biologist
—> the “civic democratic method” had nothing to do with the right of conversational biologists to educate the people <— did anyone else get that?

section (6)
there was a question like:
"this woman had background in both technology and humanitarianism and this _________ when she used technology to _____ of prevalent social ills
I put “disclosure… ???” but i don’t think that’s right

a short double passage on walking, –>
interconnectedness,
passage one describes the scenery
tone of passage 2 was contrary (not reflective?)

A passage on 2 teen japnese girls,
i said:
takesuma indigenous rebuked maria
takesuma thinks maria is naive
Maria said moon was continuous despite contrary events
and loss of ocean was loss of something very important
takesuma was revealed to be vulnerable
takesuma says losing things was central to a larger exchange of things

section (9)—> HUGE passage on tv/reading
literary attitude –> read with skepticism
TV’s physical form engaging—> ? dont remember
The studies show–> someone (angel 15 i think) said showed kids can see tv from 36 months, but i said something more along the lines of tv is for kids and adults, not sure
children/parent barrier–> caused by reading with skepticism?
4th,7th,9th graders –> example of people with different prespectives
TV does what to society –> breaks down barriers that were placed by reading

@wsupashley

Oh okay, thanks.
I knew the question seemed weird.

@RedNada- I had almost the exact same test as you except for the Section 4 Writing. I don’t remember those questions.

For the civic democratic question, I think I got something different, but critical reading is definitely my weakest point so don’t take my word for it. For TV’s physical form, I put that it was not easy to deny children from watching it. I agreed with @angel15 about “the studies show.” I think I answered the last one about what TV does to society with something about it ruining communication forever ?

I either don’t remember, or got the same thing, as you in the rest of your questions.

kay thanks. I put the “its not easy to deny children from watching it”, but i didnt remeber exactly what I put. thanks

wow, I had a TOTALLY different test from you, I don’t recognize ANY of the questions you are talking about. Why do they do this!!?? AH!!

For the socks question, I put 4 to ensure that at least two of the same sock is picked

also, there was a question about folding a paper hot dog way, then hamburger way, and then ______ (fill in the blank please) way and there was a hole and asked you to pick how the whole paper would look like? Did anyone put D and can anyone remember what was the 3rd way the paper was folded?

The studies show–> someone (angel 15 i think) said showed kids can see tv from 36 months, but i said something more along the lines of tv is for kids and adults, not sure.

That’s what I put. The fact that kids can see TV from 36 months is nothing but a trivial fact. The main point of the reference is to show that even from a young age, children and adults are equals when it comes to TV.

Did anybody get the question about the geometric net and the cube (question 2 on one of the sections) where it said that 4 was the bottom of the cube and then asked which represented the top of the cube? And if anyone had it, did they get 2?

I got two. fairly certain that’s right. still confused on which was my experimental section. I didn’t have any critical reading about facial expressions…

Does anyone remember the sentence completion about a woman using her tech and humanitarian background to solve social ills? Was it the choice with disclosure?

And a circle inscribed in a square with a triangle underneath, and whether 25pi was area of circle or square?

No, it was the choice with impetus because impetus implies some sort of force, some kind of propulsion. I forget the second half of the sentence but I know both of the words fit for it.

25 pi was the area of the circle and then you found out the diameter was 10 and since the triangle was a 30-60-90 and one side of the square was the hypotenuse and the y value can only be found by the vertical leg which was opposite of the 30 degree, the y value was (10/2) and hence 5. Tell me if that made any sense.

Did anyone get the sentence completion with altruism/connoisseur and compassion/perfectionist. I had the second one but a last second change of thought made me choose the first one and I’m starting to regret it :(.

Motion: I’m pretty sure it was compassion/perfectionist.

RedNada: Yeah, I remember that, but I can’t remember the choices. And the answer to the question about the circle inscribed in the square was 5.

At the last second I saw ‘employees’ and linked it with connoisseur, shoulda gone with my first instinct on that one I guess. Gah! How many can you miss on reading to still have 700+? Is it 7?

Also, did anyone get the last part of the writing section with the consumers and the dude video taping them? If you did, did you get systematic approach or simple formula for what he did or w/e?

yes that is right

For one of the sentence error questions in the writing section, one question was like “Though [someone’s name]'s book was initially received respectively, blahblahblah”

And “respectively” was underlined, and so I circled that as the error since it should have said “respectfully”.

Did anyone else get that as their answer?

Raine, I’ve heard that that’s the correct answer.

Motion: I got systematic approach for that one.
