Now that I've job shadowed, what comes next?

I got this great opportunity at a hospital shadowing not only a neuroradiologist (both diagnostic and interventional), but basically the entire department. He was kind enough to show me a lot. The hospital specializes in diseases like Parkinson's that give tremors. I saw a ton of surgeries (like deep brain stimulations led by a top DBS surgeon) and got a taste of everything in the department (IR stuff using all of the scans like CT). Really cool stuff, the experience has made me certain that I want to go into medicine.

Can I use this on my college apps? I see "chance me" posts with "___ hours of shadowing" everywhere. How would I go about doing this? Do I need a letter of recommendation or something? I'm panicking since I feel as though I'm really behind on my college stuff.

Thanks in advance : )

I’m not sure about the process for using it on college apps, but if you want to use it on med school apps, you’ll need to continue shadowing there during college, as med schools only look at ECs you did during college (but may consider long term ECs started in high school and continued through college).

That sounds like an amazing opportunity. Best of luck!

you wouldn’t need a letter of rec to list it. You would probably need his contact info on your app somewhere though because if it’s not some organized thing that the school knows about, they may (probably won’t though) want the option to contact him to verify you weren’t making it up.

If you have the time, you may want to shadow some other type of doctor to get a feel for other fields. Your best bet would probably be to ask him to introduce you to some other physician in the same hospital.

Thanks TitoMorito, I’ll keep that in mind! I’ll definitely see if I can continue to shadow throughout my undergrad time.

iwannabe_Brown, thanks for your reply. I have identification so I can come in whenever, so do you think it would help to scan the I.D. and send it along with the app? I’m not even sure if I can do that considering I haven’t really started my apps/don’t know the logistics.

I will definitely continue to shadow, but I’m a little pressed for time as I don’t have free days anymore (summer is just about over), and I have obligations such as band and volunteering on the weekends.

Just list shadowing as you would a summer job or internship - give the dates and provide the usual contact info.

And what comes next is more in depth experiences in medicine - research, internships, jobs in the industry, etc…all of which you will need for med school applications.
